There’s been a celebration of the “dad bod” in recent years. But what does a dad bod look like, exactly? It’s kind of the average “normal” guy physique. Not necessarily a guy who hits the gym regularly, but not a guy who’s overweight. Not a guy with six-pack abs; more like a healthy guy who enjoys some beer and pizza once in awhile. Picture a guy who’s strong with some muscle – but still a little soft and cuddly, not all bodybuilder-chiseled.
Male celebrities, just like female celebrities, go through phases where they trim fat and muscle up for movie roles. Or they gain weight and fans wonder what’s happened to their previously sexy physique. At times they look buff and sexy; other times, they look more like the guy next door. Some of our favorite male actors have probably flaunted a dad bod at one time or another, but we still love them, right?
In fact, what’s hotter than a favorite male celebrity… than said male celebrity becoming a dad? It’s the perfect formula for smoking hot! Celebrity + dad x dad bod = HOT! HOT! HOT! There’s something to be said about seeing a big guy gently cuddling a baby. Or a doting dad with a group of little kids crawling all over him and climbing him like a tree. Women turn to mush when they see stuff like that… Even if the guy has more of a dad bod than a buff bod. That’s what makes some of our favorite celebrity dads so attractive. Check out how fatherhood looks on these celeb dads and see what they have to say about parenting!
15 Tom Hardy – On Embracing Responsibility
Hunky Tom Hardy is known for his tough guy roles in movies like The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max. But at home… he’s not so tough. The actor welcomed his first child with his wife Charlotte Riley in 2015. Riley and Hardy met on the set of a TV project, got engaged in 2010, and married in 2014. Hardy also has a son named Louis Thomas with former girlfriend Rachel Speed.
Hardy has said that fatherhood has completely changed him as a man. He says he’s fully embraced the responsibilities that come along with fatherhood, and that “there was no longer very much time for [him] to think about [himself] anymore – because there is somebody now on the planet who really needs [him] to get [his] act together and focus on something that is more important than [himself].”
14 Vince Vaughn – On His New Purpose
Funny guy Vince Vaughn has two kids with his wife Kyla Weber. The couple welcomed a daughter named Locklyn Kyla in 2010, and a son named Vernon Lindsey in 2013. If it seems like the actor hasn’t been as visible as he used to be in Hollywood, it’s because he’s busy raising those two adorable kids! The whole family made an appearance in 2015 when Vaughn placed his handprint and footprint in cement at LA’s TCL Chinese Theater.
After the birth of his daughter, he told People Magazine that parenthood gives your life a different purpose. Vaughn gushed about his wife and how grateful he was that both mom and baby were healthy. He also talked about getting ahead of himself and worrying about things that are far down the road – like where his newborn daughter would go to college. The actor’s Swingers days are behind him, that’s for sure.
13 Mario Lopez – On The Father-Daughter Dynamic
Scads of us fell for Mario Lopez when he played high school wrestler (and dancer) A.C. Slater on Saved By the Bell. But from what it sounds like, you can take the guy out of Bayside, but you can’t take the Bayside out of the guy. He told People Magazine that he loves to have dance parties and wrestling matches with his kids, Gia, age 6, and Dominic, age 3.
Of his daughter, Lopez says that while she likes to roughhouse with her dad and brother, she’s very much a girly-girl. He also spoke about what it’s like fathering a daughter, saying that the “father-daughter dynamic is incredibly important” because “it’s the very first male bonding experience.” He went on to say that the way a girl is raised and treated by her father will likely set the standard for the way she expects to be treated from other men in her life. And, as Lopez says, if you raise her and treat her right, she won’t put up with anything less.
12 David Beckham – A Humanitarian
In 2016, David Beckham received the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Leadership award for his work with UNICEF. He spoke about how his family, saying that being a father made the award even more special. Beckham has four children with wife Victoria; three sons named Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, and a daughter named Harper. Beckham has said that being a parent is challenging, because you want to set a good example for your children. He said he feels like his children are proud of him; they know that he goes on trips to support UNICEF and he explains his work to them.
In his acceptance speech, Beckham talked about his children, saying, “I have four children of my own. I will not stop supporting this charity, because this charity does so much for so many children around the world. I will not stop supporting this charity until I know that all children are safe from these diseases.”
11 Ashton Kutcher – His Testimony
The former host of Punk’d recently testified before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a hearing on modern slavery and human trafficking. His testimony will blow your mind. Kutcher spoke on behalf of Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children, an organization he co-founded in 2009 with Demi Moore. The organization develops software to fight human trafficking.
In his testimony, which he said was one of the greatest honors of his life, Kutcher took on Internet trolls who say that celebrities like himself shouldn’t quit their day jobs and stay out of politics. He called his “day job” his work as chairman of Thorn and as a father to his two children with Mila Kunis – daughter Wyatt and son Dimitri.
Kutcher spoke knowledgeably about the issue of human trafficking and called for additional funding for increased work with the foster care system and mental health system, legislation initiatives, and technology. He cited progress, giving data about software programs that have reduced investigation time and helped identify over 6,000 trafficking victims (2,000 of which were minors) in six months. You can watch Kutcher’s opening remarks here.
10 John Legend – On Mom-Shaming
Lots of people love Chrissy Teigen and her handsome hubby John Legend. However, for some reason, the internet also loves to criticize Teigen (and, well, a lot of celebrities, TBH) for their parenting skills, choices, and beliefs. Even their activities that don’t involve their kids get a lot of disapproving feedback.
Shortly after Teigen and Legend’s daughter Luna came along, the couple went out to dinner for a date night, leaving Luna at home. The internet wasted no time bashing Teigen – how dare she leave that brand new baby at home?!? What was she thinking going out for – gasp! – a few hours?! Teigen has no problem defending herself from Twitter haters, but John Legend didn’t hesitate to stand up for his wife, saying “Funny there’s no dad-shaming.When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all. We’ll split it.” Kudos to him for sticking up for her!
9 Channing Tatum – On Raising A Little Girl
Channing Tatum recently wrote an essay for Cosmopolitan in which he recalled the first time he met his wife Jenna Dewan, and how he hopes their daughter Everly inherits her mother’s spirit. He hopes that Everly grows up to be as authentic and honest as Jenna. He said that he wants the little girl to grow up and be the person she’s meant to be – without worrying about what men think.
Commenting on gender stereotypes, he said that it’s a refreshing and beautiful thing that women and men are beginning to break free from the roles that society has ingrained in us. Women are beginning to recognize that they don’t have to conform to certain standards in social and sexual behavior. According to Tatum, “When more women start to truly feel this power in themselves, the world will become so magical, it makes my head hurt.” He said that he hopes that his daughter refuses to allow preconceived standards to affect her, to figure out what she wants, and to feel empowered enough to go after it.
8 Chris Hemsworth – A Superhero Dad
Chris Hemsworth may play the Norse god Thor in the movies, but no joke, the guy is like a real-life superhero at home. Even though he has a booming Hollywood career, he’s busy taking care of three kids – a daughter India Rose, and twin sons Tristan and Sasha.
He reflected on fatherhood in Parade Magazine, saying that parenthood brings out the child in all of us. As a parent, you’re constantly reminded of the fascination you had with certain things when you were little. You’re constantly discovering and seeing things in a new way through your children’s eyes. You also learn, despite everything else that may be going on in your life, to put them first, because you’re their hero.
And, in true superhero-style, the Aussie actor came to the rescue on his daughter’s birthday. According to USA Today, Hemsworth baked his daughter’s dinosaur birthday cake because the bakery said they wouldn’t be able to finish one in time.
7 Taye Diggs – On Co-Parenting
Taye Diggs says that there’s one simple thing that men can do to get themselves on the way to being a great dad. “Be there… Show up.” You probably know Diggs from his work in films like How Stella Got Her Groove Back and The Best Man. Or maybe you’ve seen him on Broadway in or Rent Hedwig and the Angry Inch. But did you know the dad is also a children’s book author?
Diggs’ debut Chocolate Me was based on a poem he wrote about his experiences growing up black in a mostly white neighborhood. He recently published a second book, Mixed Me, which deals with a young boy who is coming to terms with being interracial. Diggs used his family for inspiration. He fathered his son, Walker, with his now-ex-wife Idina Menzel.
The couple split in 2013, but their main focus is their son. According to Diggs, although they are separated, their son is what makes them a family. He says with a kid in the mix, there’s no time for negativity. Menzel told People, “Your child comes first, that’s all.”
6 Ryan Gosling – Superstar Dad
Ryan Gosling is having a huge career thanks to the success of La La Land, but the actor seems to be enjoying a very low-key lifestyle off camera with his girlfriend Eva Mendes and their two daughters Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. According to People magazine, Gosling is a kid at heart; a fun dad with a lot of energy.
You would think the two stars would be living in the lap of luxury, but they prefer to give their girls a normal upbringing by keeping their private lives out of the spotlight. According to People, they like to get out of town where they have the freedom to be out and about without all the attention of fans and paparazz – there aren’t many pictures of their family to be found on the internet!
Unlike many Hollywood stars, they don’t live in a sprawling, lavish compound. Instead, they live in a two-bedroom home in L.A. They take care of their girls themselves, although they occasionally rely on help from Mendes’ family.
5 Ryan Reynolds – On Having A Big Family
In 2010, Ryan Reynolds received the honor of being named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. In 2016, the actor received the title of People magazine’s Sexiest Dad Alive. Ryan Reynolds and his wife, actress Blake Lively, have two children, and Reynolds loves being a dad to the little girls, saying that it didn’t take long for him to be wrapped around his daughters’ fingers.
Reynolds said that after growing up with four brothers, he’s happy being surrounded by girls, although he wouldn’t mind having a little boy someday. Lively is the youngest of five children, so it’s thought that the couple would like to have a big family someday. We’ll just have to wait and see!
4 Hugh Jackman – On Pursuing Dreams
Hugh Jackman, star of Wolverine and father of two, recently talked about parenting and fatherhood with Mom.me. He spoke about the importance of letting kids be kids for as long as possible. The Eddie the Eagle star stressed the importance of talking to kids about how important it is to find the thing you love and give it your best.
Jackman said that when he reads scripts and decides on a role, he keeps his children in mind, knowing that as they’re growing up, they are dealing with lots of fears, insecurities, and hope for the future. On watching Eddie the Eagle with his two kids, Oscar, and Ava, he said that he hoped the film’s messages sunk in: “Don’t worry what other people think of you, just do the thing you love. Just keep going and keep that positive attitude. Don’t necessarily focus on the result or winning, just keep trying.”
3 Usher – Primary Custodian Of Two Kids
In 1997, Usher’s album My Way dominated the charts. He is well-known for his career as a Grammy-winning singer, dancer, and actor. A role of his that you might not be too familiar with is primary caretaker for his two children with x-wife Tameka Foster. Despite his success in the entertainment industry, a packed-schedule, and a heated custody battle, Usher was awarded primary custody of his two children, Usher Raymond, and Naviyd Ely Raymond, in 2012.
After a 2016 pool accident left their son Usher injured, Foster returned to the court system to try to win primary custody of the two boys, requesting that if Usher could not be present with the kids, that they would be with her. Previous psychological exam results indicated that Foster had a “moderately severe mental disorder” and the previous custody arrangement was upheld, despite Foster’s accusations that Usher has been an uninvolved parent. While it’s not every day that the father is the residential custodian, Usher’s case shows that dedicated fathers can serve as primary caretakers.
2 Matt Damon – A Lucky Guy
Matt Damon revealed to ET that being a dad makes him feel “really lucky.” The star added that when you become a parent, everything changes in wonderful ways, and that his whole life opened up “when [he] became a dad.”
He sounds like he’s been lucky in love, too. He’s been with his wife Luciana Barroso for over a decade, and still gushes about her. The couple met when she was tending bar in Miami. They now have four daughters: Isabella, Alexia, Gia, and Stella.
Speaking of Stella, beer producer Stella Artois is a partner of Water.org, an organization co-founded by Damon. Damon is working with Stella Artois and Water.org to help eliminate the world’s water crisis. According to Damon, “It’s a massive issue for men, women, and girls… As a father of four girls, it’s deeply affecting. These are real human beings and it’s impossible not to see the faces of your own children in the faces of these children.”
1 Mark Wahlberg – On His Entourage
He’s been a rapper, model, actor, and producer. The hit HBO series (and movie by the same name) Entourage was based on his arrival in Hollywood in the 90s. When he’s not on set, actor Mark Wahlberg is with a new entourage – his family. Wahlberg and his wife, Rhea Durham, have four kids – Ella, Michael, Brendan, and Grace.
The actor is all about family – even running a chain of burger joints with his mom and brothers and sharing it all on the reality series Wahlburgers.
As if he’s not busy enough, he also sounds like a great dad. He gets doughnuts for breakfast, lets his wife sleep in, takes the kids to church, and regularly attends the kids’ games. He also really enjoys playing with Legos with his sons, and says they have quite a collection. “We go to the toy store every week for more. I never want to take what we build apart; I want to put it on a shelf. My wife is starting to get a little annoyed with the Legos lying around.”
