Baby milestones are one of the most fun things about being a parent. Watching them learn and explore their world is incredible and I know I for one rushed through these milestones in excitement to see what happens next, especially on my first baby when everything was so exciting and new for us. The second time round, I took things slower and willed her to stay a baby as long as possible because the time simply goes far too fast. You'll know what I mean when you suddenly have a three year old running rings around you.

We spend our days willing our little ones to roll over, crawl, walk, try new foods, and talk. Those firsts are magical moments and every parent cherishes them. Dada, on repeat, was the first word uttered by our little girls and being their primary carer as a stay at home mum at the time, I'll admit I was a little miffed! Where was Mama in all of this? Of course, now they won't stop saying Mom, Mom, Mom as they follow me everywhere and ask me for everything and anything under the sun.

Traditionally, speech and language therapists say that Dada usually comes out first since it's one of the easiest words for their little minds and tongues to get their head around. But when those little babbling and cooing sounds change to real words, it's an exciting day regardless of what they say. Of course we'd all love a funny or heart warming story to go with our little one's first words and while some people's babies have said incredible things from the get go, many are like mine and blurted out the traditional Dada and Mama.

15 Melissa Joan Hart's Son Mason Said "Oh Sh*t"

I wonder if Melissa Joan Hart was being completely serious when she told the world that her son Mason spouted the words Oh Sh*t as his very first words. How funny would that be? It is definitely a story to share with all of his friends at his eighteenth birthday party! Kids love to repeat everything they hear and they have absolutely no censor or off switch.

As soon as your litte one starts talking, or before, obviously in Melissa's case, we need to be that extra bit careful with what we say around the young ones. It's never really that nice to hear a small child or a two year old say bad language so we, as parents, aunts and uncles need to set an example. Telling little ones not to say something when they've heard you say it a million times is never going to work. It's a case of monkey see, monkey do. Your kids will near enough always repeat what they hear at home!

14 Heidi Klum's Son Johan said "Roooaaww"

Heidi Klum's son Johan wins hands down in being the most creative and voracious with his choice of first word! According to Heidi, her son with singer Seal, Johan, blurted out a massive roar which she has marked as his first word. The beautiful little boy loves to roar like a massive lion and would roar around the house as he played. Soon after mastering his roaring skills, Johan added the traditional choice words of Mama and Dada to the list of his growing vocabulary as talking took off rather quickly after that.

I'd love it if I had an interesting story like Johan's about my first word or for my little girls. But some kids are just so incredibly unique and I'm not sure there are many kids who will be able to top Johan's roar! Did your little one say anything as interesting as Johan for their first word?

13 Zooey Deschanel's Daughter Elsie Said "Cheese"

Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik's daughter, Elsie, has a great first word! Cheese! Since it is one of the beautiful little girls favourite foods, her dad, Jacob, decided to try and teach her how to say the word. And voila, she managed it! Well done, Daddy. Now, Elsie can ask for exactly what she wants when she's yearning for her favourite snack food.

Encouraging our kids to speak is a vital aspect of reaching this milestone and many parents actually do this without them realising it. We often talk back to our little babies in the same babbling speech as our little ones talk to us. With gentle coos, and soft babbling, we add in different tones and sounds when we talk back to our babies. This teaches them about inflection and tone and where emphasis should be on certain words. We also, as Elsie's Dad has done, educate them on the words associated with objects by telling them to use their spoon, eat their yogurt or play with their toy phone. By continually talking and interacting with our babies, we are encouraging them to speak every day.

12 Gwyneth Paltrow's Daughter Apple Said "Agua"

We are a one language family. I've never been good at languages. It's as though I don't have an ear for it. I didn't necessarily struggle in school with languages but I will admit I didn't keep any language skills up once I left. I would have loved to have been able to educate our girls with a second language growing up but unfortunately it's not a skill I have. You can imagine my utter jealousy when finding out that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's daughter, Apple, said Agua for her first word. Agua is the Spanish word for water.

Gwyneth, who is multilingual, spoke Spanish to her daughter quite a lot and gave her daughter the love and education of not one but two languages. Apparently, Apple has a keen ear for languages and when she was a baby she intermingled English and Spanish words as she learned to talk. I am so impressed by both Momma and baby and yes my jealousy has spiked.

11 Cocoa Austin's Daughter Chanel Said "Hi"

Coca Austin and Ice T's beautiful daughter Chanel may very well be a socialite in the making since the happy little girl's first word was hi and she simply loved to say it over and over again. What a fun and beautiful first word for a fun loving little bundle. If Chanel grows up in the limelight and ventures into a career similar to either of her parents, her first word will come in very handy!

We often, unknown to us, encourage the first word our little bambino says by reiterating the same word and hi would certainly be a word we would say over and over again to our little ones through play and with their toys. When they say their first word, however, is completely up to them and they may surprise you at a moments notice as they blurt out that first word that you will remember forever.

10 Drew Barrymore's Daughter Olive Said "Bird"

Drew Barrymore's beautiful little girl, Olive, must be a bird whisperer. According to Drew, Olive "is obsessed with them" as she uttered bird for her first word. It's no wonder that bird was her first word as a lot of babies first words come from repetition and if little Olive had a love of watching the birds fly around in the garden, her inquisitive mind would have locked on to the birds and it would be only natural that she would say bird first over Mama and Dada.

Of course Mama and Dada was being said by the beautiful Olive in no time at all but her love of birds still stayed. I love that Olive chose to say something completely unique to her for her first word and that it was tied into something she really loved to watch. She's right too. Birds are fascinating to watch as they zip around quickly and sing us songs from the trees.

9 Katherine Heigl's Daughter Naleigh said "Dada"

Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley's oldest daughter, Naleigh, decided not to break the mold and whipped out Dada as her first word. Luckily for Katherine, saying Mama was soon hot on Dada's heels and the little princess was saying both Mama and Dada in no time. Funnily enough Naleigh used the word Dada for everyone she loved and not just for dear old Josh, which is such a sweet way to show how much she loves her Dad.

Katherine explains that "Naleigh learned with me that the word Mama was synonymous with kisses, so when she first started saying Mama, she would also make a little kiss sound." I absolutely love this and it's such a cute story to add to Naleigh's first words. You baby's first word will oddly mean quite a lot to you, especially if it is either Dada or Mama. The fight over which is said first is often very real among parents who vie to be their little ones first word!

8 Chrissy Teigen's Daughter Luna said "Cat"

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's adorable little Luna uttered cat as her first word. Much like Drew Barrymore's daughter who said bird as her first word, Luna loved cats and it was no wonder she spouted the feline word for her very first word. Chrissy even caught the moment on camera as she enticed little Luna to say the word.

It's actually quite important to encourage your child's verbal skills. Your little one will go from making the adorable babbling and cooing noises to attempting to verbalise words they often hear. It's a good thing to talk to your little one as much as possible and to encourage their speaking skills. But remember that every child will say their first word in their own time and not to worry if this specific milestone takes longer than you thought it would.

7 Tori Spelling's Daughter Stella Said "Mama"

Tori Spelling was as honest as me when she said "I wouldn't be human if somewhere inside there wasn't a little sadness that her first word wasn't Mama," when her daughter Hattie uttered Dada for her first word. Tori and Dean McDermott's oldest child, Liam, also said Dada when he first wandered into the world of talking. Luckily, Tori's middle child Stella, was a Momma's girl and she said Mama for her first word. Of course, Stella's second word was shoes and that simply reinforced the mother and daughter bond!

It's interesting how many babies say Dada before Mama especially considering a large proportion of childcare is done by the mother including the mountainous task of breastfeeding. You'd imagine, with a somewhat closer bond, that Mama would be the first word many babies say, but Dada comes out more often than not. I like to console myself with the fact that Dada is simply easier to say than Mama!

6 Josh Duhamel's Son Axl Said "Ball"

Fergie and Josh Duhamel's son, Axl, said the word ball first before everything else. He must be a sports fan and it'd be interesting to see if his first word has any effect on what sports he chooses in school. Fergie also told us that little Axl was quickly saying the word Ma also as he added in more words to his vocabulary at a quick rate.

It's great fun waiting to hear just what exactly your little one is going to say. After months of practicing various coos and vowel sounds, your little one will be talking in no time. Believe it or not babbling along with your baby and copying the sounds they make in their pre verbal state, actually helps them to communicate with us quicker in actual words. Of course, as soon as their first word is out, many more start coming and soon enough we can't get them to be quiet!

5 Kate Middleton's Daughter Said "Pop, Pop"

We are all obviously fascinated with Kate Middleton and Prince William's beautiful little prince and princess, George and Charlotte. Seeing them grow up has been a pleasure since they are just too darn cute. Making beautiful Princess Charlotte even cuter was when she was overheard during a trip to Canada saying the words pop, pop! These were the first words her adoring public heard her speak. At the time she was playing with some gorgeous balloons and uttered the cute words. What a clever little girl. Princess Charlotte was also heard saying Dada on the Canadian trip.

I would love to know what little conversations Charlotte and her big brother George have together. Knowing that Kate has her hands full with two beautiful toddlers, I'd imagine they have some very interesting and funny conversations indeed. There's nothing better than hearing two young siblings start to have little chats with each other.

4 Christina Aguilera's Daughter Summer Said "Book"

Christina Aguilera and Mathew Rutler's daughter, Summer, actually said book for her first word which was closely followed by Dada. I'd love it if the two were connected and that Summer and Mathew were avid night time readers together. Reading books is an incredible way to increase your little one's vocabularly and they say that reading to your baby from three months old is a fantastic way to encourage their language skills.

In fact, reading the same books over and over again, while it may be tedious for Mom and Dad, is a great way for kids to pick up on certain sounds, tones and words which will enhance their language skills as they get older. They may not necessarily start talking sooner than other children but their level of understanding and willingness to read and speak will be greater. Apart from that, reading with your child is a wonderful way to bond. You just can't beat a good book!

3 Mark Zuckerberg's Daughter Max Said "Dog"

Since Mark Zuckerberg's daughter, Max, was born we have been inundated with beautiful photographs of the gorgeous little girl and the family's best friend, their dog, Beast. It's no surprise really that Max's first word would be dog. Often, little ones pick up on the one thing they love the most or something they are incredibly fond of when deciding to utter their first word. Beast is obviously a very loved and cared for part of the Zuckerberg household and Max would be just as attached to the animal as her parents would be.

I'd say Zuckerberg was delighted that Max's first word was dog and not Mama or Dada since he is just as attached to the family pet as his little girl seems to be. Beast, who clearly is one of the lovable pets a guy can own, is adorable with little Max. But I'd imagine that soon after dog was uttered, Mama and Dada was hot on it's heels.

2 Blake Lively's Daughter James Said "Mama"

Hooray for Blake Lively who's beautiful blonde daughter with husband Ryan Reynolds, James, said Mama for the first time when she started to talk. Of course, the beautiful little girl is now a wonderful chatterbox and has added Dada and many more words into her vocabularly. While Dad is usually a first choice word for many kids, saying Mama is always a heartwarming moment for all Mum's.

Ryan, I'm sure was delighted that Mama was their little girls' first word, although I'd imagine there was a twinge of jealousy there as there always is with Mum's and Dad's. The one thing you have to remember though if your little one chooses Dada over Mama or vice versa, is that it most certainly is not personal. It only gets personal when they learn how to play Mum and Dad against each other, but let's hope that that is many, many years down the line!

1 Jessica Biel's Son Silas Said "Dada"

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's son Silas decided to stay within the norms of most kids and uttered the word Dada the very first time he decided to talk. Of course, Dada is one of the easiest words a young baby can get their mind and tongue around so it's often the first word said by young kids. As a mother to kids who said Dada for the first time too, I will admit to using this as an excuse when I get a pitying look that my kids didn't say Mama first. "Oh but Dada is much easier to say," I often reply!

Nevertheless, no matter what word your little one says for the very first time, there is no denying that it is one of those milestone moments that needs to be recorded and remembered forever. In fact, I know the time, date and place my little ones said Dada for the very first time. It would be nice if there was an interesting story behind it, but more often than not, the fact that your little one has spoken for the very first time, is interesting enough for Mama and Dada.
