There may be no greater heartbreak in this world than the loss of a child. It’s the greatest part of ourselves that parents must say goodbye to when their children leave this world before they do. It feels unnatural. We’re supposed to go first.

There’s a reason Sally Field brings us to tears every time we see that cemetery scene from Steel Magnolia’s. We resonate with it. We feel her character’s pain. Still, we can’t imagine actually going through that.

Sometimes, we assume that the rich and famous are oblivious to this kind of pain. The truth is, whether we chock it up to a higher power or just the way the world works, money and fame will never buy us the one thing we want most with our loved ones: more time.

Celebrities are certainly not exempt from the kind of pain and heartache that comes with losing a child, either, though it’s safe to bet most wish they were. There are a multitude of reasons we could lose our babies, too — making it all the scarier. Unfortunately, these celebs can actually relate. Taken too soon, they’ve all suffered through losing a child. They are proof that the pain never dies, but life goes on.

15 Kelly Preston And John Travolta

Hearts all over the world broke when the news came that Kelly Preston and John Travolta — one of our favorite couples — had suffered the loss of their 16-year old son, Jett. The boy had fallen while having a seizure and hit his head on the bath tub.

Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease when he was just two-years old. The disease can cause the arteries to become inflamed, which can lead to heart trouble down the road.

Although there was a lot of speculation surrounding his death, an autopsy revealed that it was in fact the seizure that killed Jett and not the fall and blow to his head. The couple remains together today with their daughter, Ella, and son Ben who was born after Jett’s death. Kelly and John have both expressed publicly how much Ben’s arrival brightened their lives and encouraged them to be okay with moving on.

14 Mia Farrow And Andre Previn

There may be no celebrity that has lost more children than Mia Farrow. That being said, there are few celebrities who have had more children than Mia Farrow has, too. A mother to 14 kids, 10 of whom have been adopted, Farrow has dedicated her life to being a mother.

The first loss came in 2000 when her adopted child Tam died after a long battle with congestive heart failure. The 19-year old blind girl was adopted by Farrow in 1992. In 2008, tragedy would strike again as Mia lost Lark Previn, a daughter she shared with her first husband, Andre Previn. While rumors swirled that Lark had been battling an illness related to AIDS, her ultimate cause of death was pneumonia.

In September of 2016, Mia’s heart would be shattered all over again when news broke that her adopted son Thaddeus was in a fatal car crash. News later surfaced that is wasn’t a car crash that killed him. Rather, Thad committed suicide and shot himself in the torso in the car.

13 Jennifer Syme And Keanu Reeves

This couple seemed fated for one another. They were a hit romance that had fans jumping for joy when they announced their pregnancy in 1999. Unfortunately, Jennifer and Keanu suffered from a devastating blow when she was roughly eight months pregnant and the doctors discovered the little girl the couple should have been preparing to take home with them was stillborn. They named her Ava Archer Syme-Reeves.

Keanu’s pain didn’t stop there. The couple tried in vain to keep their relationship intact, but the heartbreak of the baby’s death did them in. Then, just a year and a half after their heartbreaking split, Jennifer was killed in a car accident. Keanu has been quoted as saying: “Grief changes shape, but it never ends.” There may be no truer words to describe the kind of angst and despair a parent goes through when they lose a child — even one they never got to meet.

12 Jenita Porter And Dr. Dre

It was heroin and morphine that would claim the late, great son of Dr. Dre. Andre Young, Jr. was a lively 20-year old man with the world at his feet. The overdose that took his life was deemed accidental, and Young’s mother, Jenita Porter, recalled hearing him snoring that morning at roughly 5:30 a.m. before she found her son, lifeless, just five hours later. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

We certainly can’t say this grief held Dre back from becoming a phenom in the world of music and artistry. He has gone on to produce hundreds of albums that have hit multi-platinum status and even sold Beats By Dre platform for a cool $3 billion. Dre is proof that it’s okay to move on from grief, though we’re sure not a day goes by that he doesn’t long for his son.

11 Mayte Garcia And Prince

From a distance, it looked as though Mayte Garcia was nothing more than a back-up singer for the artist formerly known as — well, you know. Up close, the pair were a couple and shared one of the most blessed and equally heart wrenching events that could ever enter a person’s life.

In October of 1996, Mayte gave birth to the couple’s son, Amiir. The little one was diagnosed with Pfeiffer Syndrome, which means the bones in his skull fused together in an abnormal way and too early in life. This didn’t allow for expansion of brain development. The eyes were on the outside of his eye sockets, and his feet and hands were web-like, almost like paws, due to the same bone fusion in his limbs. Thus, the baby passed away just six days after being born. We can only hope Prince and his little man are now reunited.

10 Marie Osmond And Brian Blosil

Arguably the most famous Osmond of them all, Marie Osmond had lived most of her life in the spotlight. She stood out as the only Osmond daughter among six sons, and has taken a lot of heat for her lifestyle choices and parenting tactics over the years.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to imagine Marie didn’t blame herself in some way when her son Michael took his life by jumping from an eight story window in 2010. At the time, she and Michael’s father, Brian Blosil were divorced, but the two stood united with their blended family amidst the heartache that followed Michael’s death.

Marie was quite public about her feelings following Michael’s demise, and even noted that her son left a suicide note declaring his intentions because he couldn’t bring himself to grapple with life anymore. It was known that Blosil suffered for years from clinical depression.

9 Mildred Harris, Lita Grey And Charlie Chaplin

Charlie wasn’t as quiet as he seemed. After all, he had time to woo four women into marriage and help bear 11 children. His first child was a boy named Norman Spencer Chaplin. Sadly, Charlie would lose Norman when he was only three days old. In those days, this kind of thing was much more respected among celebrities. So, he and his then-wife Mildred Harris were left to mourn in private.

When his second child died, Charlie Chaplin, Jr., who was the son of another ex-wife, Lita Grey, Charlie didn’t even live in the country. So, he wasn’t able to attend his own child’s funeral. Some say that this placed a great amount of grief on his shoulders that he never truly got over.

8 Jackie And John Kennedy

The world was fully engulfed in the charm of President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline. They were America’s favorite couple, but beloved around the world. The couple was relatable. People felt like they knew them. So, when the pair welcomed their third child, a son named Patrick, the whole world was filled with joy for them.

Sadness would fall upon the nation when the couple welcomed their son 5.5 weeks before he was due. Weighing in at just 4lb 10.5 ounces, the little man was diagnosed with hyaline membrane disease. Back in 1963, this was the leading cause of death in infants who were born prematurely.

It was thought that children who were able to endure the first 48 hours of life with the condition would have the best odds at survival. Despite rushing the baby to the Children’s Hospital in Boston and the prayers of a nation on his side, little Patrick’s body gave out after 39 hours.

7 Loretta Lynn And Oliver Lynn

A mother of six, Loretta Lynn has plenty to sing about when it comes to honky-tonk blues. She’s lost two of her beloved children over the years. In 1984, Lynn’s son Jack Benny drowned while trying to ford the Duck River. He was 34-years old.

Just when one would think that’s more than any person can endure in their lifetime, Loretta would lose another child. In 2013, her daughter, Sue, died as a result of emphysema. The 85-year old songstress is still fit as a fiddle and even touring this year. No parent expects to outlive their child, and those who do tend to insist it’s something no one should have to experience.

Family members let on that Loretta took the news of Jack’s death terribly. She sobbed throughout his funeral service as she stared at his casket, and lost her composure the way you’d expect any mother to at his graveside before burial.

6 Barbara And George Bush

It was all the way back in 1953 when this couple, slated for the oval office, would lose their darling daughter. At just three-years old, the couple’s little girl, Robin, was diagnosed with leukemia. Barbara has since spoken on the topic and conveyed just the kind of bedside manner parents were handed back in the day. When she and George asked what they were to do for their child, they were told they couldn’t do anything and that she would die.

The doctor gave Robin just two weeks to live. Her parents couldn’t bear to not even try, so they struck out their own voyage across the country to have her treated at one of the nation’s finest facilities. Back then, treating cancer was almost unheard of, but they were going to fight it.

Despite all their attempts to recover their daughter from illness, she perished at almost four-years old. Barbara has remarked that she saw her daughter’s spirit leave her body as she was holding her and brushing her hair.

5 Sasha Czack And Sylvester Stallone

While he wasn’t exactly a little boy anymore, 34-year old Sage Stallone lost his life suddenly to a heart attack in the summer of 2012. Initially, there was a lot of speculation that because of his age, Sage’s death must have been due to drug abuse. His famous actor dad pleaded with the public and the press to stop the rumors, but they continued to ensue.

It wasn’t until the autopsy report was released that the news confirmed no drugs were present in Sage’s system other than acetaminophen at a standard dose amount. It turns out that atherosclerosis was at the center of this death and it led to a heart attack that killed the talented young man. At the time, Sage was engaged and working on several films.

4 Marguerite Whitley And OJ Simpson

Back before all the headlines about Nicole Brown Simpson and burglary, O.J. Simpson was a presumably normal guy with the perfect life. When he married his first wife, Marguerite Whitley, the couple was thrilled to soon welcome their daughter, Aaren, to the world.

Tragedy struck their family in 1979 when just before her second birthday, Aaren was found in the family swimming pool. She had drowned. Her little body was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where she entered a coma. Still, it was too late for intervention. Aaren died.

O.J. and Marguerite — parents also to sons Arnelle and Jason — had divorced earlier that year. There was speculation that O.J. blamed his ex-wife since the drowning happened on her watch in her home. As though losing a child isn’t bad enough.

3 Anna Nicole Smith And Billy Wayne Smith

Although no longer together at the time of their son, Daniel’s, death, both Billy and Anna Nicole were notably grief-stricken. The media focused a great deal on Anna Nicole Smith following her son’s demise in 2006. While many celebrities try to hide the fact that they are involved with drug abuse, Anna Nicole didn’t shy away from the truth.

Daniel died as a result of a lethal cocktail containing Zoloft, Lexapro and methadone. The doctor who reported his toxicology results noted that Daniel had no history of opiate abuse. Instead, he was taking methadone for pain.

Anna Nicole had just given birth to a baby girl in the Bahamas, and Daniel was visiting her when he died in his mother’s hospital room. Just six months later, Anna Nicole, presumably still sick with grief over the loss of her son, died as a result of ingesting nine different prescription drugs.

2 Cassandra Harris And Pierce Brosnan

Years ago, Pierce actually walked away from the film business for quite some time. It wasn’t for rest and relaxation, or a trip to rehab for exhaustion that pulled this star away from the limelight. Instead, his first wife, Cassandra, was dying of ovarian cancer. He made it his full-time job to care for her.

Twenty-two years later, Brosnan would suffer through a perhaps even more painful experience as he watched the life slip away from his daughter, Charlotte. She was the only daughter the couple shared, and she too was losing the fight with ovarian cancer at the very same age that it took her mother.

Pierce was quoted as saying, “Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.”

1 Nena And Benedict Freitag

This is a pretty frightening story if you think about it. Back in 1988, Nena — better known to song as the famed singer of her self-titled band and the hit 99 Luftballoons — and then-boyfriend Benedict Freitag welcomed their son, Christopher into the world.

Unfortunately, Nena’s birth experience hardly went as planned. While details were never revealed, we do know that the doctors who delivered Nena and Benedict’s baby made some serious errors in judgement during the process and this led to disability in the baby and cardiac arrest for mom. Due to these medical complications that arose during the birth, Christopher Daniel perished at just 11 months old.

Wrongful birth lawsuits exist for a reason. This kind of thing does indeed happen. Parents are often hushed with money that cannot possibly replace their child. Marriages often don’t survive this kind of heartbreak. Nena and Benedict’s relationship lasted long enough for her to birth twins in 1990, but they split soon after.
