Fashion and maternity are not exactly synonymous for anyone, but celebrities seem to have a little trouble at times figuring out the line between attention-getting and ridicule-inviting. Some stars never seem to hit a false fashion note while expecting, like Blake Lively, Kate Middleton and Natalie Portman. However, others could have an entire article on maternity fashion disasters devoted solely to them, such as Kim Kardashian and Blac Chyna.

Let's be honest, it's tough to look great while swollen, nauseated and cramping. Then there's this weird silhouette to drape in some way that doesn't appear that you are shoplifting a watermelon and a pair of playground balls. While you may want to look stylish for an evening out, the only shoes that are comfortable around your ever-enlarging feet are sneakers, or maybe slippers. Forget the sexy high heels! While we are thankfully beyond the days of hiding the baby bump, perhaps sometimes we are a little too comfortable letting everything (and I do mean everything!) hang out.

One of the biggest faux pas in my opinion is in trying to project a sultry, sexy look while obviously growing a small human. While you're liable to be sexy to your man, everyone (almost everyone, that is!) else is looking at you and thinking one thing; baby!  Those ideas are not generally easily connected.

15 A Lovely Tablecloth

Let me start by saying, I love Drew. She seems sunny, not unlike her yellow dress, and down to earth. She is candid and warm, and easy to relate to, compared to most celebrities. Especially those famous since their birth! But this dress didn't quite hit the target. While some simple, unstructured dresses are appealing, this one just didn't seem like the best cut for Drew's shape at this point in her pregnancy. Maybe a slightly different structure, some detail or necklace nearer the neckline or a different bodice would have done the job better. Usually Drew has worn maternity clothing that seems comfortable yet attractive. She has a sense of style that doesn't usually miss, although she can wear some eclectic styles. That's OK, because Drew is a true original. She has been acting since she still had baby teeth. Her first big splash was at age 7 in the blockbuster film, ET.

14 Is That A Ruffled Diaper?

Beyonce, as in her singing, doesn't hit a lot of bad notes with her wardrobe, either. However, this little number was all off-key. I'm sure she won't be pulling it out to wear again now that's she's expecting twins. The bodice is fine, with it's peplum detail and the material of camel-colored...leather? is just fine. But once you get past the waist, things go way off track. The bubble shaped bottom is not quite there enough in length, and then it sort of looks like an ornate fabric shade that's ruffled and dolled up with a little sheer gauze at the hem. It's just too odd, inappropriate and incongruous with the rest of the ensemble. It resembles a diaper that a baby has worn into the pool, and is now swelled up to ridiculous fullness. It's highly unlikely you'd ever find anything remotely like this item in your local Motherhood Maternity store, so you needn't worry about buying one by mistake. That mistake was already made once...by Beyonce.

13 Peek-A-Boo Emmy Dress

I think Kerry Washington is a class act, and quite beautiful. Her look is almost always impeccable. This just isn't quite up to her sophisticated standards. The cut of the pantsuit is a bit unusual, going up high just under the bust with bare skin popping between. Then there's the long draping material attached to the top part of the suit. It isn't quite enough, or is it too much? Plus I imagine if I wore such an outfit (you know, to the PTA awards or something) someone would be bound to step on that long swath of material and it'd be an epic fashion fail and possibly a fashion fall as well. In all fairness, this is the only outfit that is questionable of all those of Washington pregnant pics online. I recognize the pressure to not wear the same basic maternity evening gown most stars have donned at Oscars and Emmys, but this needed a bit of alteration.

12 Polka-Don'ts

Remember this little polka-dot dress M.I.A. wore to the Grammys several years back? It's an oldie, but a ....well, not a goodie! The rapper from the UK by way of Sri Lanka is actually named Maya Arulpragasam and she did create a lot of buzz with this outfit. But not the kind most celebs hope for. It remains a classic, fashion nightmare for pregnant women. It was not a maternity dress for starters, but apparently M.I.A. thought it was well suited to be one. She may have been one of only a few to think that way. The black sheer mini dress had strategically placed patches of black and white polka dots, paired with black sheer leggings and white sneakers. It was a kind of deranged-circus chic feel to it, I guess. Now most preggos will avoid clothing that garners that much attention, and polka dots have a retro maternity feel to them, but this went way too far!

11 Pink In White

Maybe it's me but this looks more like a crazy grandma vibe than a stylish maternity look. Pink, the pop singer, was pregnant with baby number 2 at the time. Pink and husband motocross and off-road racing star Carey Hart already have a 5-year old daughter Willow Sage, and welcomed their second child, son Jameson Moon, the day after Christmas. Pink has a no-apologies attitude and persona, and wears eclectic numbers all the time, but they tend to the hippy-punk and super casual more than the grandma moo moo--most the time. The light, airy white sundress perhaps could have worked, but the big floppy hat paired with the wide white sunglasses just seemed extra quirky, even for Pink. But let's be honest, at this stage of pregnancy when our thermometers are stuck at the high end and it's tough to find anything remotely comfy to wear, a maxi-sundress is probably one of the most livable maternity options around. So who can blame her?

10 Black Isn't Always Slimming

Janet Jackson becoming a mom at 50 made some headlines, but she kept the story underwraps for some time, and there are relatively few shots of her in maternity wear. This pic comes near the end of her pregnancy, and she is wearing head to foot black. Unfortunately the loose, bulky ensemble seems to make her look huge all over. It's OK to go big (let's face it; at this point in pregnancy we have no choice on that point) but it usually looks best to pair big and loose with some fitted items. Going big all over means...looking big all over, and sort of sloppy. While Janet has had some weight issues throughout her life, when she gets to work, you'd never know she had a problem. I'm sure that's bound to happen again! She and husband, Wissam Al Mana welcomed son Eissa on January 3rd of this year.

9 Vintage Madonna Maternity

I am glad we've moved beyond the days of hiding our pregnancies with big bows and ruffles, and there are times that an exposed pregnant belly is even cute. But I'm not a big fan of females sagging their pants (number one) and to the point where you see the hip bones (number two). When it's under a normal-sized somewhat faded Union Jack t-shirt, it's not a fashion hit but more of a fashion miss. The perennial star is now said to be worth a whopping $560 million dollars and now has 6 children; her oldest, Lourdes is 20, and the two youngest, 4-year-old twins just adopted from Malawi, round out the bunch. She has 2 children by birth, Lourdes, and 16-year-old brother Rocco. Madonna surprisingly didn't have many fashion nightmares while wearing maternity clothing, considering her penchant for attention-grabbing garments. I guess impending motherhood wins out over headline popping outfits for the pop queen.

8 Too Much Tie-Dye?

Selma Blair got a lot right with this outfit, while expecting son, Arthur a few years back. She wasn't wearing ridiculously tight, high heels but opted for a simple open sandal that is flat. She was wearing something cool and comfy, a big concern in that last trimester. And the idea of a pattern is certainly not bad. But maybe there's a tad too much tie-dye and the short yet totally unstructured dress was a bit too...unstructured. Or maybe the wind just caught it the wrong way when the photo was snapped. It's good to wear pretty and bright colors in maternity clothing, but sometimes too much big pattern can make us look more like bedspreads or furniture than we'd like! Selma, now 44, says she is unapologetic for being a totally obsessed mom, and still takes family vacations with Arthur's dad, now her ex.

7 More Polka Dots!

Celebs David Cross and Amber Tamblyn  just welcomed their daughter in February. This was the couple's first child. Tamblyn is 33 and Cross 52. They made news with their birth announcement, claiming to give the name Dauphinoise Petunia Brittany Scheherazade Von Funkinstein Mustard Witch RBG Cross Tamblyn-Bey Jr. to the lucky girl. I don't hate her outfit completely here. I like the big top paired with the more fitted pants, and always love a celeb who has the good sense to wear sensible shoes when greatly pregnant. What doesn't quite work for me is the polka dots on sheer fabric with a black bra revealed beneath. Maybe I'm a prude mixing sexy with pregnant, but I don't think I'm the only one! Tamblyn made news recently with her essay for Glamour magazine about women and feminism in America, and their baby girl's photo had the hashtag, #TheFutureIsFemale.

6 New Definition To Mom Jeans

She could have added a third belt, but it wasn't going to make this little outfit any better. Jessica Simpson may have her own maternity wear line, and it's probably quite nice, but these jeans shouldn't be worn like this! They'd be quite fine with a bigger top draping over them, however. The addition of the two animal print belts just drew the eye all the more to the eyesore. Jessica is now mom to two little ones; daughter, Maxwell age 4 and son Ace, age 3, with husband, former NFL player. Jessica got her first record deal at 16, went into reality TV, aired in a few movies and seems to stay quite busy now with clothing lines and other products. She also has been under scrutiny off and on through the years for her struggles with weight. However, full her figure may be, her voice and face remain lovely as ever.

5 Too Much... Everything

I guess Blac Chyna thought it would be convenient to need not change if going into labor in this dress; you'd definitely be able to see the baby crowning! Again, no need to hide a baby bump in these modern times, but to have a dress split up to there, and skin tight all over...it's simply too much. However, this is not Blac Chyna's only maternity, or general wardrobe, fashion faux pas. There were several worthy candidates!  She and Rob Kardashian are parents of son King Cairo, 4, and baby daughter Dream, 2 months. For fans of reality TV, or reality TV stars, this may be old news. For those like me who shun reality TV like a societal scourge, (book nerd, sorry!) I had to get up to date via the internet. Her real name is Angela Renée White and she got attention as a music video...girl before falling into reality TV fame with baby daddy Rob.

4 Rare J Lo Fashion Miss

Jennifer Lopez has become a fashion icon, and while she can make headlines with some risque outfits, her sense of style is generally beyond reproach. When pregnant with her twins, now 9, J Lo initially held off with announcing the pregnancy, and even tried to hide it for awhile. Believe it or not she was still denying as late as when these photos were taken. But when the fan caught the flowing top and revealed the less than glamorous high waistband of these wildly printed pants, the gig was definitely up. Once the news was out, her maternity style was up to her usual standards. Of all Jennifer's accomplishments, it's quite obvious there's nothing she's more proud of than son, Max, and daughter, Emme. She posted this birthday wish to them this week,  "You are two shining lights that make this world a better more beautiful place for me and everyone who is lucky enough to know you..."

3 Too Dowdy

Naomi Watts is mother to Samuel, age 8, and Alexander, 9, and ex to their father, Liev Schreiber. The couple announced their split months ago after rumors of his infidelities. Naomi, now 48, usually dresses with seemingly effortless grace, and that included her maternity clothes days. However, this ensemble just didn't quite deliver the usual grace of her wardrobe. Again, the casual low sandals are great choices, and nothing is wrong with a lightweight dress once that pregnant thermometer gets stuck on the warm side. The brown belt under the tummy of the sundress just seems to emphasize the clunkier side of the pregnant figure. She seems more dowdy than necessary in the cut of the dress with the belt, so maybe a few little tweaks could have saved the outfit. While we can't be our usual stylish selves (if we are fashionista types) while pregnant, we don't have to wave the white flag, either. Watts has starred in a number of remakes, such as King Kong, as well as giving an Oscar-nominated performance in 21 Grams.

2 Horrid Choices

Like I mentioned in the introduction to this article, Kim could have an entire article on her maternity fashion fails, featuring only her! Here are two of the finalists for worst ones. The black animal print pants with a peplum (not typically a good move in maternity-wear) emphasized the wrong things, like the lumps and bumps that aren't the good kind. The coral jumpsuit looks sort of like a nightmarish harem outfit, making the overall shape appear mega-sloppy. It was a miss, from top to bottom. The one thing I can say that wasn't wrong about these two outfits, they weren't pushing sexuality, which is much more her usual go-to approach. However, the low cut unstructured coral number's neckline made her bust look loose, low-hanging and pendulous.

1 Is It A Sofa, Mrs. Doubtfire, Or...

While most of Kim's maternity fails involve too much skin and trying too hard to be sexy while sporting some of the most swollen cankles ever photographed in Hollywood, this fail is uniquely different. There were loads of photos comparing this dress to a coach, but this comparison is both spot-on and hilarious. No offense to fans of the late Robin Williams' iconic Mrs. Doubtfire character, but it's a pretty close match. The style of the dress itself was uncharacteristic for Kardashian's usual pretty elegant and flattering look, but the print was a hideous nightmare of couch material. Some tried to compare her maternity wear to the ever-graceful Kate Middleton's but that was beyond laughable to even try to put them in the same category beyond famous and pregnant. Kim is mom to daughter North West, age 2, and son Saint West, age 1. Their father is famous/infamous rapper and entrepreneur Kanye West. In case of live under a rock and haven't heard!
