A few years ago, the Duggar family was respected as one of the few reality TV families that seemed to have no skeletons in its closet. Everyone seemed to respect and love one another. Mom and dad were respected and obeyed. There were no pregnancies or births that took place before the wedding.

Fast forward to 2017 and all that has changed. Josh Duggar was accused of being inappropriate with a family friend and a few of his sisters. To make matters worse, he was also caught with an Ashley Madison account that allowed him to virtually and physically cheat on his wife, Anna. He also stole another man's image for his Ashley Marie profile. At least one family member has outed himself as transphobic. One of the sons has posted an online photo of himself holding two long guns. It turns out the entire family is, well, gun-crazy.

Many parents may cringe at the thought of their child having visible injuries when being photographed. One of the Duggar daughters has, more than once. Clumsiness? Parental inability to be everywhere at once? What about "blanket training?" This one was controversial enough that mama Jill decided to remove that image from the internet. Finally, how unusual is it for the parents to teach their children how to kiss? Yep. That happened.

15 Growing Up Duggar

What is it really like growing up in the Duggar household? Look up to find out! In June, Michelle Duggar posted the photo of Meredith and Spurgeon, her two grandchildren, using mops to clean the floor. They look adorable, no question there, especially when the mop is double their size. But it wasn't the image that caused controversy, it was the caption that was attached to the photo that blew the internet's mind. Michelle writes, "Train them young! These little ones love to help!"

Fans and followers alike were concerned about the Duggar's parenting style. You might think everyone over exaggerated, but with the Duggar's history in the back of your mind, it's hard not to look at the word "train" with disdain. People brought up how girls need to be trained as housewives young... and it's hard not to see it that way.

14 Chaperons Are Forever A Must

As in, younger than teenagers. We get it. But there are several things glaringly wrong with this scenario. First, do the younger siblings/chaperones know just what they are supposed to be watching their older siblings for? Kissing, hand-holding, that wicked hand on the back thing?

Second, by allowing younger siblings to chaperone their brothers and sisters on dates, the older children aren't allowed to naturally begin the maturing and separation process from their parents. This is a process that all teens and young adults go through. It's not easy in the best of times. So why make it even more difficult by putting roadblocks. . . er, brothers and sisters in the way? Third, speaking of the younger children, their older siblings need independence from them as well so they are able to figure out just who they are.

13 Johanna's Mysterious Blemishes

Johanna Duggar has several pictures online that show her with some mysterious injuries. Small scrapes on her forehead, things like that. Looking at the pictures, she's clearly older in one of the pictures and the scrapes are in the same area of her forehead.

Well, maybe she's clumsy. And a child of that age doesn't need to be supervised 24/7. And that brings up another point. The Duggars may have so many children they can't provide adequate supervision for every one of them.

Here's another question. When putting images of their children online, why are they allowing multiple pictures of one child who has slipped, fallen, done something and gotten hurt? Weed those images out and put up other images that show Johanna with no injuries. Or take her to the doctor and find out why she gets hurt so often. Especially with scrapes on her forehead.

12 Jill 'Blanket Trains' Her Baby

This may go against more than one accepted parenting practice. Let's tackle them one at a time. First, "blanket training" involves wrapping a young (very small) child in a blanket as a form of discipline and teaching. It isn't just wrapping a small, active child in a blanket. It's using a flexible item, such as a ruler on the child.

In this image, Jill and Derick Dillard have who looks like their son, Israel, swaddled in a blanket. He's not happy. He may have been getting swatted with a thin, flexible item that "taught" him not to try to get out of the blanket.

Here's how this practice violates two parenting premises: First, babies learn by moving around freely. Of course, all dangerous items and situations have been removed. Second, while young children should mind, they need to have some measure of autonomy. If you this is bad, look bellow to see the child putting a marker in his mouth. Round of applause.

11 Jill's 'Hispanic' Child - But Did She Cheat?

This little baby is a sweetie! He's the son of Jill and Derick Dillard. And his skin is a little darker than his older sibling's. That doesn't mean anything. He just may have more melanin in his skin, making him a dark-skinned baby.

For instance, Derick may have some dark-skinned relatives in his immediate family. If so, then the chances that one of his children would have a darker complexion go up. Yes, the Duggars are all pretty fair-skinned. But let's not jump to conclusions here.

Still, once the Dillards (and the Duggars) saw the reactions to little Samuel's one-month picture online, they may have regretted putting his image on their blog. After all, why subject an innocent infant to conjecture and hatred? Let's remember, our children don't know about the world, so why should we burden them with prejudice?

10 Jim And Michelle Teach Their Daughter How To Kiss

This should be a total no-brainer. Even if someone hasn't ever kissed someone else romantically, they'll "get it" when the time comes for that first Big Kiss. Our children and teens don't need lessons. They really don't need those lessons from their parents!

Now, these "kissing lessons" went into the nuts and bolts of doing so. Who turns which way so noses don't bump? But deciding ahead of time who's going to turn in which direction? "Ben, you tilt your head to the left and I'll tilt mine to the right. Next time, we can reverse head-tilting directions, okay?" SMOOCH!

Normally, kids don't mind seeing their parents sharing PDA. It's a reassurance that mom and dad love each other. But seeing them kiss as part of a lesson? That's a bit. . . weird.

9 Michelle Shares A Pic Of Her Stillborn Baby

Jubilee is the stillborn baby girl that Michelle had when she was already in her mid-forties. Parents who lose a child before birth grieve just as much as those who lose a child who lived after birth. And they express that grief in a wide range of ways.

When Michelle Duggar decided to post a photo of her holding Jubilee's tiny hand, people were understandably upset and confused. After all, who does that? Take a picture, yes. Keep that picture for your personal archives, definitely. But posting it online? That crosses the line for many, going from a simple expression of love and grief into something that's weird and morbid.

It seems that Josie's very premature birth (25 weeks premature) and Jubilee's stillbirth helped them to understand that Michelle's body was not able to sustain a healthy pregnancy anymore.

8 The Duggar Hypocrisy Summed Up In A Photo

Oh, she's covered up where it counts. But given how modest the Duggars are, wearing a cheerleading uniform and having a photo taken isn't something to be proud of. The family's faith requires that everyone be covered up from their necks all the way down to their knees—especially the girls. Well, Michelle's cheerleading uniform stops well short of her knees and it bares her arms all the way to her shoulders.

Not only did she like to wear her cheer uniform, she would wash the family's car and mow the lawn while dressed in revealing clothing, such as bikinis. While she represents herself as a modest woman who doesn't let her passions rule her, her past would say otherwise. While she and Jim Bob were dating, they allowed their relationship to become far more physical than they allow their children to go in their dating relationships.

7 TMI Derick... TMI

Derick Dillard has been pretty outspoken about his feelings toward transgender individuals. He doesn't believe the condition exists. That people who say they are transgender "aren't" transgender.

Instead, he says, the gender of a person is "ordained" by God. Hmmm. . . Aren't priests the ones who are ordained? It seems that Dillard just doesn't like people who identify as LGTBQ. In short, he's prejudiced.

Understandably, when he clicked on this tweet to make it public, he probably didn't expect quite the level of backlash he got. And he got a lot of backlash! That didn't come only from the LGTBQ community, but from the population in general. And well he should have gotten it. Because we can't help who we are. Also, someone who identifies as LGTBQ doesn't "choose" to be so.

6 Leaving Baby Josie Behind

In 2009, right after giving premature birth to little Josie, both Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar took part in a protest being held at a meeting of the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control. That's all fine and good, on the surface.

But Michelle did so while baby Josie was struggling to survive after being born at 25 weeks gestation! Not to question her decisions, but she may have done the baby more good being there, at her bedside.

Until the Duggars showed up, the establishment (a convenience store) was well on its way to obtaining that beer license. Afterward? The ABC powers-that-be denied the store its license to sell beer. After the outcry, the Duggars may have wished that this picture had not been taken. Of course, they may have also been successful in their aim by writing a letter.

5 Enforcing The Second Amendment

John David, Jessa, Joy Anna and Jedidiah all have pictures of them holding rifles and semi-automatic shotguns on social media. Okay. We get it. This is a family that strongly believes in the Second Amendment, as is their right.

Jedidiah and John David received their weapons for Christmas. Jessa may have only been holding a gun in a store. We don't know. Joy Anna was was on her mission trip in El Salvador when she had her picture taken with El Salvadorian armed guards. Maybe she was indulging her inner Second Amendment protector, who knows? But. . . she was also wearing shorts in that image. This is something strongly frowned upon in her family.

Wait a minute, let's go back a few steps. The family doesn't like the girls wearing shorts, but the kids can hold shotguns and semi-automatic weapons. Ohhh-kay. Yeah.

4 Even Around Their Five-Year-Old

Yes, the Duggars fully embrace the Second Amendment as they are free to do. But there’s supporting it and learning appropriate gun safety. Then there’s embracing it like an octopus and allowing someone to just leave a loaded rifle on the ground where one of the younger Duggars can pick it up and shoot themselves or someone else.

This incident took place when little Josie, the youngest Duggar, was five years old. The family was out on a sporting and fishing day. Guns were taken along and someone in the family just put a loaded shotgun on the ground. Did Josie try to pick the rifle up? Does it even matter? It was the responsibility of someone who has supposedly taken a gun safety course to properly secure that weapon.

3 Celebrating Columbus Day

For those of you who don't know, Columbus Day is a (controversial) American holiday. It celebrates Christopher Columbus' discovery of America, but many critics point out that it also celebrates the genocide of indigenous people. Surprise surprise, Jill and Derek took part in the celebration. Not only did they get dressed up, but their little baby boy was also (forced) to take part in the festivities - sporting a hat and beard. But it wasn't the costumes that pissed off the internet, it was Derick's post. He uploaded the pic above with a caption connecting the holiday with the "discovery of Christianity." Of course the post stirred up some major drama, and this isn't the first Derek caused controversy.

2 Josh's Ashley Madison Profile

Oh, Josh, Josh, Josh. First, he molested his sisters and a female family friend. If that wasn't bad enough, the fans and detractors of the Duggar family found out that he had also created a profile on Ashley Madison, a website created for men and women who want to cheat on their spouses and partners. The website's motto is "Life is short. Have an affair." Well! That says it all. Josh didn't "accidentally" create his profile or cheat. He knew exactly what he was doing.

That's not the only thing Josh did. Rather than use his own photos for his profile, he stole an image of Matthew McCarthy, a DJ based in Los Angeles. Because Josh and his entire family are public figures, his theft of McCarthy's photo backfired onto McCarthy as well, harming his reputation with his family and employers. McCarthy wound up suing Josh Duggar for $25,000.

1 Defending Josh On Live TV

What Josh did was deplorable, there's no argument there. But what his parents did after the fact, left everyone speechless (and rightfully so). Jim Bob and Michelle did an interview with Megyn Kelly, where the patriarch of the family defended his son. He dismissed Josh's actions and made it seem like an innocent mistake.

Oh! Oh, well. That's that, then. Case closed. Just he didn't "go under their clothes," he didn't actually perpetrate them. Because then, it would have crossed that invisible line into a crime.

Reading further, where Jim Bob says that he and Michelle went out and talked to other parents they know and learned that the same (he said "similar") things had happened in their families. As though that made it all hunky-dory! This was a crime. Period. Full stop.
