are there cough medicines that are safe for a 1 year old? I'm about to call the dr but am still wondering. my son has no fever, but his nose is like a faucet and he's got this awful sounding cough. otherwise he's acting his normal self, other than being tired from staying awake coughing most the night.

No not really. they don't recomend any cold meds for children under 6 unless the dr recomends something.

Nope. They do recommend running a really hot shower and sitting in the bathroom though, to help with congestion.

No, unfortunately you can't give them anything w/o the dr's permission. They usually just recommend vaporizers, baby vicks, nose drops and suctioning their nose out...things like that.

Hylands makes a homeopathic cough syrup for 12 months + and if you go by weight they have a Cough and Cold syrup for 2 years+. The cough and cold stuff worked for my son. I have only found the cough syrup for 12 months+ at an herbal/vitamin shop and the cough and cold was found at wal mart. Good luck.

When my son was 12 mo old he had a bad cough and I was out of state for a funeral and all they could recommend to me was a humidifier, vicks scented things like the rub or the plug in or the drops for the humidifier or they said I could do a homemade sort of cough suppressant of a half teaspoon of corn syrup. They said it acted like a cough drop by coating the throat. It worked crazy enough. They didn't recommend any medications to me besides motrin or tylenol for an irritated throat and benadryl for congestion and sleeping at night (the cough was keeping him awake).

waiting for dr to call back now. nurse said sometimes she lets people use benedryl to help with it so they can sleep better and not get rundown to catch something else. in case anyone else is wondering.
