how do I know if my baby is too hot or cold? dream 2 kids; Linz, Ob, Austria 59815 posts

My baby is 11 days old. The weather here is in "changing mood" moving from winter to spring. We keep our apartment plenty warm enough, so I'm not too worried about him being cold. But how can I tell if he's getting too warm?

I know it can get a lot warmer during the day and for ME, I'll put on something short sleeved (in the house) and maybe even shorts (again, only in the house .. it's still cold outside).

He is wearing a diaper, a onesie and a sleeper (you know, with arms and legs) which is less than they had him in at the hospital. When he naps, I'll put a light blanket over him too, although I haven't done that today 'cause it's been pretty warm.

How can I tell when I should take a layer off?

i was always told to dress the baby how you would dress yourself. so if you are getting too hot...then most likely so is the baby

a baby that young should always wear 1 more layer than you in the cold. so if you have a shirt and a sweatshirt, put the baby in a onesie, a sleeper then a blanket/sweater-type thing.
an easy way to tell if they're too hot is to feel the back of their neck. if it's damp or hotter than normal, the baby is too hot.
if their skin is a splotchy purple and white (like on their arms and legs), they're too cold.
but my pedi's rule of thumb is 'one more layer than what you're wearing' and it's always worked for me.

I always used.
Dress your baby how you dress, plus one layer, like a small blanketr or something
