Chances of survival/risks of birth @ 33-34 weeks khick09 Due August 20; 1 child; Edmonton, Alberta 291 posts

Okay ladies-don't make fun of me TOO much, but just for fun I had a psychic party with some friends/family members. We all had our readings done-and at one point, our psychic, Mavis, told both of my parents that I would have Cullen (our second boy) in 3-4 weeks. Now I know that I should take everything any psychic says with a grain of salt and humor, because who knows if they're really right; but it got me thinking...what IF I DO have him around that time? What are the chances of Cullen surviving without any health risks etc? My Husband has officially put me on "house arrest" LOL well okay not house arrest, but BED REST (which is fine with me haha I'm half thanking her for telling us what she did, now I don't have to do as much work) because we want Cullen to stay in until term (as long as that's a healthy option for him). I know I'm being a COMPLETE gullible nerd here, but you never know. What can you ladies tell me about premature births at 33-34 weeks?

viable (sp) is around 25 weeks so are 33weeks you may just be looking at a NICU stay if the baby's lungs are not fully developed

It's dangerous, there'd be a NICU stay, but the odds of survival are high

But please say you're kidding?? Your husband put you on bedrest because of some "psychic" whack job? That'd make ya'll ALMOST as crazy as the psychic!!

I can tell you that bedrest (if youre being serious) isnt a great idea unless your doctor orders it.

Good luck, though, and I hope baby stays in!

The nurse from the nicu came in and told me when I was on bedrest with my second daughter that the chance of the baby surviving is fairly high and that they will probably be very small and have breathing problems, could have undeveloped lungs and could have latching issues. So, you just never know because every baby is different. I wouldn't stress out about it though because it is out of your hands.

My step-brother and his gf just had their baby 3 days ago at 33w4d, and he is in the NICU, but is already off of the breathing machiene. They said he should be able to go home in a few weeks if he gains enough weight.

I had my first son at 33 weeks and 2 days. A rocky start, but he is 14 1/2 now and taller than his mama.

My twins were born at 35 weeks. My son had a one night stay in the NICU due to elevated blood sugars but my daughter was in the regular nursery the whole time. The also came home with me 3 days after being born. (We have a home care nurse come over for a few weeks to make sure everything was fine) While there are chances that complications could happen, the chances are also good that there will not be any.

This is what babycenter has on thier 34 week email.

Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers

my daughter was born at 33 weeks. she was in the NICU for 2 weeks and is not a healthy 10-month-old. she just refuses to walk or really stand on her own. she'd rather crawl.

Thank you SO MUCH ladies for your support...even if you all think I'm a WEIRDO :P I've had such a healthy pregnancy that I'm almot 100% sure that Cullen will stay in there past that time...actually I was king of hurt that she said anything at all, because I did tell her I wasn't due until August-and really...what business does she have telling me I'm going to have a premature baby just because I have this gigantic belly? LOL OHWELL guess that's the "psychic business for ya".
FYI-if anyone wants to make EASY and FUN money...become a psychic LOL she charged us $50 for half an hour and there were 8 people at my party...and we all paid cash so there are no taxes on that money LOL *ponders...*
Have a great day everyone :)
