Meconium drug testing!! HELP!!!!! *SoMeR~AiDeN* 1 child; Big Spring, Texas 3160 posts

Ok, so I have a question...does anyone know any of the specifics of when the test your baby's meconium for drugs? I had HORRIBLE tooth problems throughout my entire 1st trimester, went to my family doc, who gave me a prescription for tylenol#3. well, that was back in June, and I still have some left and I do take them occasionally when I get really bad headaches...my question is, when I have my baby in January will they find traces of opiates in his meconium? I live in Texas, and I am pretty sure that they will be doing this test.

My OB knows that I got this prescription, because they did do a drug test on me(without my knowledge) at one of my first appts. and he did ask why they found opiates in my system, I told him why and he said the tylenol#3 was fine for me to take for the pain(occasionally).

I am really worried that CPS might get involved and try to take my baby away from me if his meconium comes back positive for opiates!! (even though I have the prescription) Does anyone have any information or experience with this?!

Need some HELP!!!!

They test in the hospital somtime but if you have a perscription for it
there shouldn't be a problem. I don't know how long it stays in
the system for, though. But you shouldn't have a problem.

Thank u...I am just worried that because my prescription was given to me in June, they will think that it's weird that I am still taking them when they test me in January....

No, I don't think they will think it's weird especially if it's an ongoing problem. Perscriptions are good for a year.

I read somewhere that the baby starts producing his meconium at 23 weeks and that anything that you take 23 weeks and after will be in his stool...Haven't taken them very recently, but I know it's been after I was 23 weeks( I am 29 wks now)...

There is a potential to find any substance used throughout your pregnancy in the baby's meconium. (Even if the baby isn't forming meconium, most substances cross the placenta and can end up in the amniotic fluid, which then is incorporated into the meconium). I am not sure if they would consider your prescription questionable, it would really depend on the details of the prescription. If the doctor prescribed them for tooth pain and the tooth pain is resolved, then that's technically abuse, althouh I doubt they would get into it and can't prove why you took them. I don't know about the laws in TX, here i don't think it is standard testing, but know they can test any baby at any time without your consent. I don't know if that helped at all.

I was prescribed Tylenol 3's for my migraines, and I was 3 months pregnant when i got the prescription. I still take it also, I wouldnt worry about the drug test, my doc doesnt expect me to finish it before i have my daughter. As posted earlier you have a prescription.

When I went into labor they gave me a drug test as well. I thought they needed your permission before they could do that?? Anyways I wasn't told till after me and my baby passed. When he was first born they put a little bag thing over him to catch his first urine they said it was just for some test. And then my next nurse was like do you know why they are doing that and I said not really just for some test. And she was like yeah a drug test because I didn't go to the doctor till I was 14-16 weeks pregnant due to Health insurance issues and they refused to see me...

I was prescribed Vicoden and somehting else in the first and second trimester I didn't take it long and that never came back well they didn't say anything about it..

I am certified for drug testing. If the prescription is over 90 days old, it is not valid. So I would stop taking them so it will be out of your blood. If they find it in baby's poop, it will be in there from before but make sure it is out of your blood. I am surprised that Tylenol 3 showed up as an opiate though. Never experienced that one.
