oooh ok that makes sense. they took tons of blood and pee at my first appt so im sure they did drug test me, just prolly came back negative so it was never brought up to me. i dont think theres any state that drug tests newborns as a standard screening.. its pretty expensive, and it seems like they have to have a pretty good reason to do it! ahhh i just cant wait to get this baby OUT!!! lol

Drug testing during pregnancy or on admission in labor is not manadated by law in any state that I am aware of in the US. It tends to be random and based on local practice. The reaction to a positive drug test also varies and may or may not have anything to do with a legal prescription. Taking the prescription to the hospital is a very good idea. Testing the baby without mother's consent also varies from state to state. In states without "rules" this may be hospital to hospital. Hope this helps.

okay so a lot of people have this stuff wrong....in most states now if you are on a medical card they are required to drug test. if you pop positive normally they inform you that you need to be clean for the time of delivery. at that time they drug test you if you're clean nothing further is done. if you are still dirty, they then test the baby. most hospitals still use a urine annalysis but some have started using the meniconin which is the babies first dirty diaper. you will be assigned a social worker who it is then their responsibility to meet with your OB and discuss the issue from there it is that social workers decision of what happens next. normally CPS is invovled with random home visits and random drug tests for the first few months...as long as you only test positive for marijuana. if you test positive for 'harder' drugs (i.e. cocaine) they normally take the baby at the time of birth without even testing the baby. please before posting articles do reseach. each state law is different though.

If shes using Meth while pregnant she needs to quit now not only is she hurting her unborn child but if she pops up positive with it the drug test she will lose her child right then and there

YEAH I KNOW AND THATS WHY I THINK SHES SOOO WORRIED ABOUT IT, BECAUSE SHE DOESNT KNOW THE WINDOW TIME FRAME AND SHE CLAIMS SHES GONNA STOP, BUT THEN WANTS TO KNOW HOW LONG SHE HAS UNTIL SO SHE CAN CLEAN HER SELF UP...

They say that the meconium starts building up between 16-20 weeks, so anything done after that time will show up. I live in Kentucky and all the women I've talked to told me that the meconium test is standard here but I'm not sure. I'm kinda nervous about it because I did smoke weed for nausea. I've since quit because I don't want anything in my system when I go to the hospital. My other 2 children are well taken care of, I've never had any issues with CPS or been arrested for drugs, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes ok.

This is not a proven fact. My psychiatrist prescribes methamphetamine (that's right), not ritalin or aderall, for my ADHD. He has confirmed that there are NO PROVEN CASES of meth being linked to anything besides low birth weight in some cases. I also got a second opinion and the second psychiatrist ALSO confirmed this. People think they know everything when it comes to meth and pregnancy. In reality, they don't.
