Aspirated rice Disappearing Meemz 15 kids; Indiana 88176 posts

I've called the pedi, but their office is at lunch until 2. I've tried search and can't find anything. I even googled it, but can't find any quick, sensible answers. Just to get that out of the way, heh.

My husband just called from home; apparently while feeding our toddler daughter her rice for lunch, she cried and choked and he thinks she may have aspirated some of it. She's got the hiccups now, and her breathing sounds "raspy." Should we take her to the ER now as I suggested or am I overreacting, yet again?

I'd take her in to be seen!

If any type of foreign object remains in the lung you can develop penumonia.

I say wait and bring her to the doc.

No need to clog the ER with something your pedi can handle.

"If you aspirated a piece of rice, it may take a long time for it to be absorbed. You might try to use gravity in your favor by coughing while in the head down position. Rice is pretty bland and unlikely to cause infection. If you had aspirated something really irritating, such as a hot chili pepper, there would be more urgency to get it out. The over-the-counter cough expectorant might ease your cough but won't clear the rice. Neither will the antacid."

And here is a thread similar to your situation:

I don't know if it's different, since she's so young, but I wouldn't think you'd need to go to the ER. It's so scary, not knowing what's going on inside our babies' bodies.
