amnio at 35-36 weeks? Mama of *3* TTC since Feb 2013; 3 kids; Wisconsin 15841 posts

Anyone have this done? If so, how did it go? What did your doctor tell you the risks were, etc?

I'll be having a scheduled c section at 37 weeks due to previa, but have had severe bleeding at 34 weeks and am on hospital bedrest until this baby is born now. They told me if I bleed again they'll do the c section then.

Last night my nurse and I were talking and she doesnt understand why theyre not taking her at 36 weeks instead. Each day that I lay here is another day to risk me bleeding to death and the baby dying. I can easily hemmorage at this point or the placenta could tear away from the uterus, killing the baby. It seems logical to just take her when babies are generally safe to be born. They gave me steriod shots last week and shes big, so Im sure she'd be fine.

Originally, my OB told me they would have to do an amnio to do the section earlier than 38 weeks. Im curious as to how many hospitals actually practice this since Ive read online that theres debate on whether or not its necessary. Wondering if the risk of an amnio at that point is worth it in my situation.

I've always heard of docs doing an amnio prior to an early c section to make sure the lungs are mature enough.

I had one done at 36 weeks for possible induction at 37.

It's nothing major and relatively safe. They poked me 4 times to get a decent fluid sample and then sent me to L&D for a few hours to be monitored. I had another shot of Rhogam and they sent me home.

Her lungs were immature anyways.

Risks are minimal. Well, if it's not done absolutely sterile, the fluid can become infected which is a major problem. Other than that, it's possible it would cause your water to start leaking or labor to commence.

We had an amnio at 36 & 37 weeks to check for lung maturity! That's probably what your dr. is also checking for. The main risk is setting off labor...but, I really wouldn't worry about the risks [in your case], since you are being watched so closely as it is!

For health reasons for the baby, I had to have an amnio done at 36 weeks to check my son's lung materity. Seems like when you're that far along, the benefits far outweight the risks. But your OB should definitely go over everything with you throughly just to put you a little more at ease. Good luck Mama.

I had one done with Brodie at 35 weeks due to having pre term labor and checking lung maturity...basically what happened was, they put in the needle try to draw out fluid but poked him in the butt instead...had to pull out the needle and stick it in again, this time my uterus was contracting so yeah..and they still didnt get enough fluid to check..so it sucked
