drug testing ManicMandaBear Due September 30; Illinois 3 posts

I just found out that I am pregnant and I am afraid to go to the dr because I have smoked pot for most of my life and I know that there is some in my system and it will take a while to get out of it. I live in a very conservative town in Illinois and getting caught with only a g of weed will get you a long jail sentence. DCFS is also everywhere here and I have heard of them taken away babies immediately after delivery for having weed in the mothers system. So my question is how often do they test for this and about when? I am willing to stop for the baby nut I am afraid I might have an occassional slip up because I have been smoking for so long.

honestly, they usually don't. it depends on the hospital, but unless they have cause to believe that you're doing hard drugs, they won't test you.

I don't think they do test for it unless the doctor suspects something. I am on pregnancy #3 and have NEVER been tested for any drugs...but I haven't been on anything and have never given them a reason that such a test would be warranted.

doctor/patient confidentiality should be in order for that..I believe, but they'd only take the baby away if you have drugs in your system right before giving birth...stop smoking pot and you should be fine.

How do they test after birth? Is it the babies blood or amniotic fluid and is it like they can see he previous month before delivery or earlier than that? And what exactely are the risks of smoking weed while pregnant besides low oxygen like cigarettes?

Never
Unless u give them a reason...a GOOD reason

I smoked when I was pregnant.
I smoked right before I went into the hospital to give birth (didn't know I was in labor though)

My friend was an avid smoker. She quit when she found out she was pregnant, but her second prenatal appointment her doctor told her she tested positive for weed in her bloodwork. I think it may be normal procedure for a lot of doctors. She didn't come off as someone who smokes. I didn't know till I got to know her. She had no idea she was tested for it. If she tested negative, the dr wouldn't have said a thing about it.. So I think a lot of people are tested, and don't know.

With that being said, her doctor was nice about it. She was just embarrassed that her dr knew she smoked. They're not going to be mean to you. He told her she should quit, she said she did, and that was the end of it. Its possible he tested her again later, but she quit so he wouldn't have told her it was positive.

If you quit you have nothing to worry about. If you slip up from time to time be honest about it with your doctor. They don't turn their patients in to the police for testing positive for weed. I want to say that's a violation in most health privacy practice.

Now if the baby is born addicted to something, and the hospital finds out its withdrawing from some type of drug like meth, that's a different story. Then I think you can be in danger of losing your kid, but I'm not certain.

Well I know that they do test here for the hell of it. I just don't know when. :( My friends told me they were tested but they couldn't tell me when and how often. Anyone on this site from central Illinois that knows if they were tested? I wouldn't suspect Colorado for instance to do drug testing.

It shouldn't matter if they test, you don't get in trouble for it. If you don't want to quit and you aren't planning on it which is what its sounding like, tell your dr about it. That's your best bet. That way they can inform you about smoking while pregnant, and you won't worry about randomly being "caught." doctors don't like when their patients hide anything. To get the best care for your baby, you've got to be honest.

Doctors don't always need a cause. I have gotten drug tested numerous times throughout both pregnancies and my son was tested after birth. I don't smoke pot nor do any drugs. I don't even drink when I am not pregnant, so I am far from ever being tested based on suspicion. It varies depending on your doctor, hospital, and state if they test.

But on another note. Some doctors will prescribe medical marijuana in Michigan for morning sickness. So, I think your safe to have it in your system as long as you have your medical card.

Not true at all... do your damn research.
She can/could of sued them for testing her without telling her...there is a paper they make u sign if they want a drug text. If she did not get that, law suit.
I never got tested.... or asked to take a drug test. I smoked it the whole time and at any time when I was pregnant and they wanted to, it would show up..I smoke (well vape) every day .... still do. 8)

Yea curse and tell me to do my research yet you have no idea what you're talking about.

when you get bloodwork done you're usually given a paper with everything you're being tested for on it. Its usually organized in "panels" you don't sign anything normally. The panels are checked off, or the codes for extra bloodwork are written in if its not included on any of the panels.
You go in the lab, give them the paper and they test you. It is routine for some doctors to drug test pregnant women. This would be included on that paper. There is no waiver that is signed. There's nothing to sue for. Doctors who give the test do so out of the best interest of their patients. Its not used against them criminally. Get off your "I know everything because I 'vape" high horse.

I know they test u when u deliver but not at ur appts unless u tell them u did drugs. Just tell them no on all the drug questions.
