Is cramping a sign of labor? Lyric's Mommy! 1 child; Warren, Ohio 229 posts

I'm 40 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Last week I had a cervix exam, and my doctor told me I was 4cm dilated. I haven't really been having any contractions or pains until today.
I woke up with extremely dull period-like cramps in my lower abdomen. I thought nothing of it because I've felt these cramps all through out my entire pregnancy. It's been about 2 hours since then, and these cramps are getting more painful, and are coming every 5-10 minutes. I'm also experiencing some back pain whenever these cramps happen, and a few contractions as well. But the contractions aren't consistant. I haven't lost my mucous plug, there's no spotting, and my water hasn't broke, nor has it leaked.

I was just wondering if it sounds like I'm in early labor? Or getting ready to go into early labor?

I apologize if I sound stupid for asking. It's my first baby. And I already tried calling the hospital, they just kept asking if the contractions were consistant. I said no, but the cramps hurt pretty bad. They just told me to relax.....it's been 2 hours and it's still happening...so I don't know.
It's my first baby....so I'm really not sure what this is...
Any help would be great.

Sounds like early labor to me! *labor dust* And unfortunately it's only been 2 hours so it could be awhile before things steady out and become consistant.

Cramping is basically what contractions are and feel like.

it sounds like you are in early labor. Thats how it was for me.
I was 40w5d with my daughter and started getting period like cramps and they werent in a pattern either..they would range from 3-10 minutes and finally i went the bathroom 3 hours later and i wiped and there was blood!! turns out my water had broken :D

if i were you, if they dont stop, i would go in because mine were not in a pattern either.

:!: I had HORRIBLE back labor. I didn't feel any contractions in my stomach, other than little cramps. I was having contractions, but the back pain was worse so I was more focused on that.

I thought it as contractions, but my stomach isn't hardening when I have the pain? I have contractions maybe, every other cramp? Or in between cramps? It's not consistant at all.

If it continues or gets worse I'm just going in. I'm supposed to be induced this week anyhow, so he can just do it today since I'm already so close...hopefully.

Thank you guys though.

sounds like the beginning. Get up and walk around (stairs are best). Also, at 4cm, you should have lost your plug. You probably lost it during a shit or something :P

Sounds like labor is starting. You can wait it out or go to L&D... I'd probably just go ahead on.

If the cramping doesn't go away when you move around and you feel it in your back as well and some pressure in your lower region they are more than likely contractions...

Lmao. I might have lost it. I just never seen it or had any spotting at all. So I'm completely unsure. Going to go walk the house a little bit though and see if they continue or get worse.

*Fingers crossed.*
