sadly my brother and g/f lost their baby boy at 18 weeks gestation. She asked me if she had a miscarriage or a stillbirth. I told her I was not sure but my understanding was 1-19 weeks its a misscarriage and anything after is a stillborn.

Is this true?

I wonder if viability has anything to do with it? Since typically anything after 20 weeks is considered a viable fetus. IDK.. Sad though. Best wishes to them for dealing with all that.

I think it depends on the hospital. My friend had a baby at 18 weeks. He lived for 20 minutes before dying. And even though the hospital could do nothing to save him, they were given a birth and death certificate, so it was considered a birth and a death.

I've always heard 18+ is stillborn.

My condolences to them, regardless<3

eh, i'd call anything out of the first trimester a stillborn,
but it might not be 'really' considered that until the baby would be considered viable.

He passed away before birth so there was nothing they could do to save him.

A stillborn happens after the 20th week up until birth.

I thought it was if the baby passed away before LABOR, it was a miscarriage, but if baby passed away during the labor process it was stillbirth.

This. Before the 20th week, it's a miscarriage.

My OBGYN calls anything under 23 weeks miscarriage, after is preterm labor. I am so sorry for their loss. 18 weeks gestation is when I was told this baby has a heart defect.

I think if you deliver a baby its a still birth I'd say 1-9 weeks sounds right for a miscarriage

In AZ after 20wks is considered a stillbirth and will be provided a death certificate. Anything prior is considered a miscarriage.
