Deli meat like turkey really bad while pregnant? Ayden & Mason's Mommy 2 kids; California 126 posts

So I am a little confused about the safety of deli meats when pregnant...i have heard to stay away from all of it or stay away from the processed ones like bologna, hot dogs, etc. Is just regular pre-packaged sliced turkey or chicken bad?? Those are my favorite sandwiches :/

As long as you heat it up before you eat it, you should be fine.

Just eat it.

You have the same chance as getting listeria even when your not pregnant. Just make sure you're not eating old meat, you'll be fine.

I would have killed a man if I didn't have my subway when I was pregnant.

I eat it in moderation... cold cuts freak me out HOT, they are meant to be cold hahaha.

I didn't eat ANYTHING you aren't supposed to when I was pregnant with my daughter, this time around I just make sure it's super fresh.

Its not that your chances increase its that its fatal to the fetus.

Yea, but thats only if you get listeria. A lot of people think that its easier to get when you're pregnant...

I have a real issue with some of the "safe to eat" recommendations coming from doctors, and I am convinced it is merely a liability issue, and not a health issue.

They say not to eat things like rare steaks, sushi, undercooked eggs, soft cheeses, or deli meats because of the "risk of foodborne illness." Note that these foods are not inherently unsafe -- by themselves, they do not do any harm to the mother or fetus (such as alcohol would, for example.) There is merely a RISK associated with those foods should they happen to be improperly processed or contaminated, which is quite rare.

Think about it: Is ANY doctor in the U.S. going to risk the lawsuit and skyrocketing malpractice insurance that would follow should he or she say, "Ehhhh it'll probably be fine," and then something went wrong? Nope.

In Japan, pregnant women eat sashimi daily and have no issues. I'm sorry, but I don't believe for a minute that a low-fat nitrate-free [deli] turkey sandwich is less healthy than eating fast food or processed frozen junk.
