Early Pregnancy: Mucus plug? Miss Mikey ♥ TTC since Dec 2010; Marble Falls, tx, United States 685 posts

Hello all
Just a quick simple question. I know the mucus plug starts to form in early pregnancy. Did anyone notice the discharge in early pregnancy that may have been the plug forming? Can you describe it? I know it's a bit gross but I have some discharge unlike what I've had for the last 11 years, and I'm wondering if I can compare it and count it as a good sign for the future. Thanks in advance!

You can definately get more discharge. Mine has never looked too different though. Are you pregnant or ttc?

I'm TTC. My sister and I had a conversation that made me think of this. I find symptoms every month, hubbs and I are not tracking ovulation or anything and it's my first cycle off the pill so I'm trying not to think anything of this, but it's one symptom I never had before and am certainly not imagining. I don't have an infection or anything, and I know I already ovulated because I get ovulation cramping and a different discharge. TMI but it's very snot-like right now.

Thanks Jessi!!! And congrats, she's beautiful!
Last time we talked I was pretty sure of myself so I won't go and get overly excited again, but maybe April's a good time to have and make babies! Lol

Miss Mikey, I'm having a similar experience! I just began trying this month. Last month I too was on the pill - had withdrawal bleeding from July 3-9. Since we're just off the pill, we don't know how long our cycle will be -- 28 days? 35 days? or if it there will be no ovulation at all in this first month (it could be disfunctional). If I have a 28-day cycle, I'd expect ovulation on the 17th. (Note: I began using an OPK as soon as my withdrawal bleeding was over, but found it difficult to follow the instructions perfectly, so never sure results are accurate.) As late as the 16th, the OPK didn't indicate anything helpful, but I DID have nice stretchy EWCM, SO I thought I might have conceived on the 17th/18th. And some light cramping/bloating in days afterward seemed to confirm it in my mind (maybe implantation). Bizarrely, on the 21st, some extremely unusual CM popped out. It was like EWCM except the most powerful I've ever seen! It was snot-like, as you say. It was somewhat clear, but not translucent... more yellow/almost-amber tinged. It was globular and super stretchy. I researched online and found other women with similar CM who did get pregnant in the month of finding this symptom -- some thought it was residue from formation of a mucus plus, while others thought it was an extremely fertile variation of EWCM. I was leaning toward the former hypothesis, until this morning, when the OPK strip finally showed positive for Luteinizing Hormone (supposed to indicate that ovulation will occur in the next 24-36 hours). Of course, as I've said, I don't trust my OPK readings: first thing in the morning, I'm like a zombie; I'm not sure I've always immersed the correct amount of stick into the cup for the correct amount of time, and I never manage to read the strips within the exact (too picky!) one-minute time frame. It's all very confusing. And I haven't even tried tracking my temperature. Well, all we can actually DO is to have sex every other day. That should cover it. We will just have to report back to this forum in 2-3 weeks or so to let everyone know what, if anything, our odd CM indicated!!

What you girls are describe sounds very much like pregnancy discharge. But it also sounds like it could be a sign of implantation. Especially if your discharge is brownish or red when you arent on your period. Sounds like implantion bleeding. Im not a doc. I guess the only thing you girls can do is wait for a missed period and take a test! :) Waiting is the hardest part. lol

It took me 8 months to get pregnant after I stopped taking my pill I'm not sure if it had to do with being on it for 6 years straight but good luck!

Thanks, MM and RGj!

I was on the pill for the last year, and off of it for the year before that. During the year I was off, I had pretty regular periods, so hopefully that will be the case now. (Well, I hope for NO period and a BFP, but regular monthly ovulation would be a good start.) I've read that the pill doesn't remain in your body after you've stopped using it, so it isn't a pregnancy hindrance in that sense, but -- while you're on it -- the pill sort of blindfolds you from knowing what your fertility might be like. It gives the appearance of regular periods, so it can come as a surprise when you end the pill, when/if your body turns out to have irregular periods (which make it a lot harder to have sex at the right time to get pregnant).

I've also read that ovulation is possible within 2 weeks after the pill is stopped. And I have friends who conceived immediately after stopping the pill, so that gives me hope, too.

RGj, I'm sorry it took as long as it did for you, but glad you got your BFP in the end! You aren't alone, and I may have as long or longer to go... My Mayo Clinic Pregnancy book says that 1 in 4 couples who are trying to conceive do so in their first month, while another 1 in 4 won't have conceived even after 9 months... I need to stop getting so excited so early and gear up for the long haul..!
