Help! Claritin in first trimester castaway 2 kids; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 19246 posts

So, I'm only 4 and a half weeks pregnant. I went to my OB to get an 'official' positive test, and I'm not going back until June 13th.

I have HORRIBLE seasonal allergies. I mean, I cannot function properly without meds. NO joke. I also have a career and am half the bread winner, I cannot be messing up at work, or seem less than on the top of my game.

I was taking Allegra, and the nurse at my OB said not to, that it wasn't safe. She said I could take Claritin and Benedryl after the first trimester (of course when allergy season is wrapping up  )

My boss told me to just go home because I looked like hell today at work. I can't look and feel like that everyday, but I'm afraid to take something.

Anyone have their doctor say it was OK to take Claritin during the first tri?
I'll stay away from the Allegra since the nurse said no to it for the whole pregnancy.

HELP :) !

My OB gives all their patients a little booklet with approved meds. For congestion/allergies it has Sudafed, Zyrtec, and Claritin (plain) and Saline nose spray. No mention of avoiding during the 1st trimester. You could check with your MD about Zyrtec though

Thanks, my OB gave me a little pamphlet too, but it said Actifed (which I searched for last night and counldn't find) was safe.

It said you should avoid all drugs if possible during the first trimester, but I literally cannot get by without ANYTHING. **pfft**

I did some googling and it SEEMS like it's OK, but I wanted to hear some firsthand experiences.

I have bad allergies/hayfever and my doctor said that Claritin is fine during preg. She explained that there are four classifications for the meds A, B, C, and D. A being well tested and safe, which no medications for pregnancy will be under as they do not test on pregnant woman. Next B, which it appears to be safe, the ingredients in the meds are safe. C of course is caution and docs would not recommend these meds, and D, definitely not safe.... I would go ahead, I have been taking Claritin but it does not seem to work, I feel like I have a never ending cold, and it SUCKS!

I have taken Sudafed and Benadryl as needed during my first trimester for congestion and head cold stuff. But usually as needed, not on a daily basis.

my doc said both of those were ok for first tri. Some docs feel differently but I took both with my daughter and have been taking both with this pregnancy.
