Bad teeth = CPS. John Mayer. 2 kids; Modesto, California 21992 posts

Or at least that's what I saw today.
I went to the dentist today, and there was a little girl, just turned three. She needed EVERY one of her teeth capped with those silver cap things, and needed to have two removed due to decay and infection in them. CPS was called on the parents for child neglect. The dentist excused himself from my exam when they got there, and I could hear him telling the cop and the social worker he believes the child is neglected. She was dirty, her clothes were digusting, holes in them. Her hair looked like it hadn't been washed in weeks, and then the whole teeth thing. :? He came back in and explained to me that stuff like that isn't just due to not brushing and sweets, it's a sign of a really dirty home, and bacteria is crawling in her mouth and rotting the teeth :( I felt so bad, I didn't even know things like that could happen.

That is horrible :( When I first saw this my heart sank and I thought "I hope my dentist doesn't call CPS on me!" because my son is needing surgery on his teeth for the second time in less than a year  Our dentist has been reassuring me it appears to be just bad genes but I always feel so guilty.

That's what I was thinking.

I know people whose kids' teeth are horrible and they've never seen a dentist (one is nearly 10). I even called CPS (b/c they are neglected and abused) but nothing happened.

Pshh. People would think that about me if they saw my son's teeth. He's had 5 pulled, about 10 caps, 1 veneer, a spacer and a bunch of fillings/sealants. And it wasn't b/c I neglect him or that my home is dirty.

I don't know how the dentist came up with stuff getting in her mouth and rotting them:?

This sounds like neglect but it isn't always so.

I've had issues with my teeth forever. I had caps too.

It wasn't neglect. My genetics just suck.
