Contractions at 23 weeks? Help! KarmenTheGreat *TTC* TTC since Nov 2007; 11 kids; Wisconsin 5286 posts

I need answers, hopefully someone can help! My sister is 23 weeks tomorrow and is currently in L&D with small consistent contractions. She has had several complications with this pregnancy. She is very stressed (I have tried to tell her to calm down because stress doesn't help) and isn't getting a lot of answers (she is waiting on her specialist to arrive). What can she expect? will they be able to stop them? and if not what then? Has any one had a viable baby this early? I know 28 weeks is the magic number. Any help is much appreciated!

I had the same thing at 24 weeks and I got a ton of shots and medication through an IV. It stopped them and I was able to go home. (I had my daughter via emergency induction at 35 weeks because of other complications)

I have a friend on here her son was born at 23 weeks and he is now almost a year old.

thank you. just hearing that they will be able to stop them make me feel 10000 times better. (I dont have kiddos yet so I haven't experienced any of this)

i went through the same thing starting at 20 weeks. they gave me terbutaline shots and pills for a little while until a nurse could come out to put me on a terbutaline pump. i was also put on strict bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. the terbutaline pump is a small pump that you click on your pants or belt with a little tube that you have to stick in your thigh. it gave me terbutaline 24-7 and twice a day i had to get on a monitor they gave me to count my contractions for one hour each time. if i had too many i would have to drink a glass of water and monitor for another hour. if i still had too many, they would call my doc and send me to L&D. i went to L&D 5 times before my daughter was born. the terbutaline pump worked up until about 30 weeks, then they had to admit me for a couple of days and give me magnesium, which seemed to reset my body's tolerance and i was able to go back on the terbutaline pump for another 5 weeks. they did give me 2 steroid shots during all of this because they were pretty sure she would come too early. i ended up having her at 36 weeks via emergency c-section because when i got ready to push, the doc realized she was breech (and had the cord around her neck 3 times). why she didn't check this when i went in to deliver, i don't know considering at last check she was breech... but that is another rant for another time.... she was perfectly healthy (and still is) and weighed in at 5 1/2 lbs.

My sister had her son at 24 weeks and 5 days. If the baby has to come, I pray that baby can bake a little longer.

My nephew was 1 lbs 2 oz at birth. He's now almost 16lbs and will be a year old on August 1.

Thoughts and prayers to your family!
