Penicillin while pregnant I'm a spider monkey y'all 2 kids; USA 75 posts

So... I'm 2 weeks late on my period. It dawned on me today. I started taking penicillin for an absessed tooth a few days ago, and I'm worried. Me and DH took... semi... precautions (pull out method. Go ahead and call me dumb, I can handle it.) so clearly it's possible.

First question is can an antibiotic mess with your menstrual cycle? I was already pretty late before taking it, but who knows maybe I would've started by now. Second, what the hell should I do? I know they sometimes prescribe amoxicillin during pregnancy, so how dangerous is penicillin? Is there really even a difference?

I'll be testing tomorrow, but I'm due for a dose tonight. I'm on strict instructions to not skip doses, but at the same time since there's a chance I'm pregnant, I'm not sure what to do. Any insight?

Another thing I realized was I had an xray of my mouth a few days ago. Sigh.

What your taking would not affect a pregnancy if you are in fact pregnant, so you're fine in taking it still if you think you may be pregnant.
I took sooo many different antibiotics while pregnant, most are safe, and penicillin definitely is safe.
I hope you get the result you want when you test! GL!

you can also get dental x-rays while pregnant. I assume they put the lead vest on you?

It probably wont make much difference since it was your mouth and you;re still pretty early on, but it's something to bring up to your doctor if your test comes back positive.

Yeah I never have those for oral x-rays either lol.
Honestly though, I personally wouldn't worry too much about it.

What kind of dentist doesn't use a lead vest? I've never heard of such a thing. I was kinda joking when I asked!

Take the instructed dosage tonight as penicillin is one of the few safe medicines. I was on penicillin and a couple other medications in my early pregnancy and it was fine! If your pregnancy test comes up positive, I would set up an OB appointment immediately and ask the nurse/doctor if it's okay to take, which I'm pretty sure it is. Good luck and don't stress out!

All of my dentists and orthodontists have never used lead vests lol.
The only time I've had to use them is while getting a chest x-ray

I had an xray of my mouth done when I was in my late second trimester. And I had to take amoxicillan (sp?). I only wore a lead vest when they did the x-ray of the side.

Y'all need to tell your dentist to use the vest when they give you an x-ray. I've been to several dentists in 3 different states and never had an x-ray without a vest. Dental x-rays are very low dose but why have extra radiation go into your body when they should have a vest right there?
