being sick and breastfeeding.... Ashley+Mason 1 child; Michigan 544 posts

I am breastfeeding my 2 week old son, but also formula feeding because he lost too much weight since birth so we are supplementing until he gets back to birth weight. Anyway, I woke up in the middle of the night throwing up and feeling like crap, I can't stand up without feeling dizzy. my mom took him for the night so I could sleep. Then I woke up this morning and my mom had to leave for the day so now I'm home with him by myself today. When I woke up my boobs were leaking and felt uncomfortable and hurt a little, its been over 12 hours since I've breastfed him but I used my manual pump a couple hours ago to relieve the pain. I feel too sick to breastfeed him right now and plus I took a pill last nifty that my doctor said was safe to take while breastfeeding, then after I took it I looked on the bottle and it said "do not take while breastfeeding". I don't want to lose my milk supply but can't breastfeed at the moment....what do I do?

if your doctor told you to take it I think you should be fine.

If your doctor okayed it, it's probably fine. I breastfed my second child, exclusively, when I had a stomach bug.

If your doctor said it was ok to take then go ahead and breast feed if you still unsure call the nurses line and ask if it is. Also you well have to drin your breast all the way and drump tell then ok. I really do feel for you.

Well she didn't say it was okay she just said that in her little book she had it said there's no studies showing its bad but none that show its okay either so she just prescribed me to the lowest dose. thats not the reason I can't breastfeed right now, i just feel too sick to breastfeed him I can barely sit up

You can lie down and breastfeed.

I had a horrible stomach last month for like three days straight. I breastfed my 4 week old at the time just as I normally would but did it laying down. I was worried she would get sick but she was fine. In fact she was the only one in the house that didn't get sick. I would just focus on drinking as much fluids as you can stomach and feed the baby on demand. Lay down all day if you can and try to get better :)

I breastfed both my boys till over a year, and went through LOTs , so i can say that if your dr. says you may take it, take the meds and continue feeding your baby so your milk supply stays up. If you feel to sick to sit up and feed him, try it lying down in bed. I used to feed this way often and it's a great way to get some rest and feed the baby. Good luck!

iyeah i can't do it laying down, my boobs aren't big enough haha. So I can't reach him, and he can't latch on. I have to hold my boob and do compressions while feeding him for him to get anything
