My boss hates that I'm pregnant, now what? Lotusflower999 1 child; Maryland 621 posts

So I transfered into a new position right at the same time I found out I was pregnant, back in August. I told my boss about the pregnancy two weeks into my job, and my assistant director was cool with it. Well, she never told my director (and now I know why) so one day I left early because I felt really sick and I asked my director if that was okay. I made a comment about "getting used to this whole pregnancy sickness thing" and her jaw dropped. She didn't know I was pregnant, and when she found out she was shocked. A few days before that I left early to go to the emergency room because I was having cramping as well. When I came back to work the next day after my director found out about my pregnancy, she wrote me up for "leaving" and not being here, even though everything was previously approved. She basically warned me and said that I don't have much leave, and that I need to be here to train and when I go out to have the baby I won't be getting paid because I don't have any leave. THAT IS MY OWN BUSINESS, WHY THE HELL DOES SHE EVEN CARE? I HAVE NO CLUE. So basically I was pissed, and I emailed Human Resources complaining. They pretty much backed my director up, and told me the best I could do was submit a grievance on her behalf.

So now everytime I email my boss about a prenatal appointment, they HAVE to remind me that "I only have 9 hours sick leave left, just remember you won't get paid once your leave runs out." No shit. I'm so tired of being here. I hate this job simply because of this incident. I have never been written up anywhere, and my old employer is aware of what is going on and cannot believe it (she works at the same company, in a different department). Has anyone else been discriminated against before at work for being pregnant? I'm not coming back after maternity leave, I already know that. I have about 4 1/2 months to go. Plus my commute is 2 hours one way everyday, my paychecks are pathetic, and I work for a University (which you would think would be afraid of any lawsuits?) I have applied for other jobs but I knew it would be hard to find anythng at 4 months pregnant.

Sorry this is so long, and thanks for any advice.

I would just worry about your pregnancy right now cause that job definitely isn't worth it! Once you aren't pregnant and have your baby it will be easier to find a new job. There's no way that you can transfer back to your old department?

I was suddenly fired from a job a week after telling my boss I was pregnant. She said it wasn't going to work out and left it at that. Come to find out she doesn't like kids and the thought of pregnancy makes her uncomfortable so she just didn't want to be around me. I ended up finding another job a week later.

I'm not sure if I could transfer back. They are already hiring for my position. I coudl always ask. I'm trying to hold on and keep this job, but if they say one more thing to me then I'm done. My boyfriend is aware of everything, and we are about to be in a financial situation where it will be alright to quit maybe in 2 or 3 months. I just focus on my baby, and I feel like I need to defend myself from these morons.

Every job I work at, if you call in sick or leave early because of being sick they write you up. Doctor's note or not. Pregnant or not. *shrugs*

I don't see it as discrimination. Their attitudes suck.

Thats disgraceful!!! I cant see how they are treating you is any way legal and it certainly isnt fair! Where i come from employers have to follow strict guidelines when someone is pregnant, give time off for any appointments and pay you as well! They have to monitor your progress and make sure your work load isnt too much for you, if it is theyre obliged to sort alternative work for you. my employers couldnt be more supportive right now, im also 4 months pregnant at the moment. Do you have a Union or anything where you work, or someone who could represent you if you make a complaint or grievance?

Wow, that is just crazy. I knwo they are trying to fire me as well. But it's funny because I'm here on time every single day, so what can they use against me? My director even has a daughter. I don't know, but I can't wait until I go on leave for my son. I've never had to deal with anything like this before.

They cannot tell me that I can't go to the emergency room or leave early ONE TIME sick because of my pregnancy. They also cannot keep trying to get me to not go to my apponitments. It is against the law and is discrimination.

I'm not sure if we have a union, but I will look into it. I really should. I just feel so angry.

I didn't see in the OP where they told you that you couldn't go. Just that they wrote you up for leaving and told you wouldn't be paid if you take the time.

Do you proof of this? You'll need it if you want to further your complaint. Start forwarding your emails to a personal email, document everything.

Gotta love the U.S. Most places don't give paid maternity leave here.
