Change last name BACK to maiden name!!!!!! :: FirstTimeMommy:: 1 child; Illinois 3383 posts

Have you done it? Was it hard?? How long did it take?
Did you need any papers?

I have been seperated from husband for exactly 1 year and 2 weeks BUT unfortunately have not started the divorce. Well I have started, but the court date isn't for a few weeks.

I go by my maiden name for everything. BUT the most important thing, which is my Social Security, is his last name.

How do I change it back? ?I heard it is EXTREMELY difficult. =[

For my mom once the divorce was final she just took her divorce paper work to SS and changed her name back.

It is. Even after I was remarried I had to bring a certified copy of the divorce papers to the SS office and they still kept giving me the run around. I would call and ask what you need to change it. Or if its even possible to just walk in and change it.

If you are not divorced then I beileve you have to go through the courts anyway to get legal seperation papers before you can change back to your maiden name.

Maybe it is different in the US but when my ex and I split, I learned that unless you legally change your name (birth certificate and all) you simply assume your other halfs name. All I had to do was change each thing back to my maiden name individually (bank, drivers license, health care etc.) Wasn't so bad.

When my sister got her divorce she just had them put it in the final divorce agreement that her last name was to be changed back to her maiden name. After everything was finalized, she just took the certified copy to the secretary of state and they did it right there and sent her the new card.

that's how my situation was. i got married in NC and unless i took the procedure into my own hands through DSS my name stayed the same.

Same here. I wish I didn't change it. Even before we had problems in our marriage, I regretted changing my name. It caused so many problems with other things like school and insurance..

blah.
