My friend just asked me this and I don't know the answer.

What medicine can she take for a uti while breastfeeding?

You know what, I used to think that an antibiotic was necessary also, until I started getting chronic UTI's for years. I figured out a way to cure myself. I have a way that you will feel better without taking those nasty antibiotics(which usually cause yeasties anyways).

Tell her to buy a large bottle of 100% unsweetened cranberry juice(not from concentrate and not cranberry juice cocktail)

Over the course of one day drink that whole bottle of juice separated in to 8 oz servings. Sweeten it with splenda if necessary, and use ice but do not dilute it with water. After every glass of cranberry juice follow it with an equal sized serving of water. Eat plain yogurt and/or take acidophilis suppliments. She should feel better by the next day....Just tell her to make sure to drink plenty of water. if it hasn't gone away 100% in 3 days then she should consider antibiotics, but I will tell you ever since I did that the first time I have never had to take them for UTI's again. When she is done breastfeeding she should consider cranberry suppliment pills they help discourage the e-coli bacterias(the ones that cause uti's( from sticking in your bladder. A WORD OF WARNING THOUGH, SHE MIGHT GET A TOUCH OF THE POOPS AFTER ALL THE CRANBERRY JUICE FOR ONE NIGHT.

All I know, after I delivered, I got a uti amd they prescribed macrobid. It made my baby (less than a week old) horribly sick and we ended up in the ER. They gave me cipromax (sp?) instead, which you only use for 3 days.

I would only trust an antibiotic her doctor prescribes to her. I had a UTI while breastfeeding and took 2 different medicines that my OB gave me and that cleared it up right away. Honestly cranberry juice DOES NOT work, I have tried it a million and one times and if you do decide to drink the cranberry juice it needs to be the kind without any sugar in it.

Did I quote you? NO I did not. I didn't even read your post. I had a UTI for 4 months after I had my daughter, I tried EVERYTHING from cranberry juice to pills you can get over the counter and nothing worked for me.. I was put on antibiotics and it cleared up within a couple days. What works for you may not work for others, everyone's bodies handle things differently so I was just giving her a different opinion. OK THANKS!

Cranberry Juice is great! I have tried it many times with great sucsess as well! The only think is that the best time to use it is right when you first feel the symptoms of UTI coming on. If you wait until the UTI has progressed some then it usually has diminishing effects and in that case its best to go to the doctors and get whatever they prescribe. However if you know your body and get frequent UTI's and you know the symptoms (like me) then I suggest cranberry juice immediately, during that time when you are not quite sure if it is even a UTI or not, that is the best time to nip it in the butt with cranberry juice! When you wait too long is arise with a UTI and it can actually progress into a Kidney infection!
