how do i know when to go to the hospital? j.Rileys mommy 1 child; Rhode Island 1055 posts

This morning i got woken up at 4am with horrible pains but i wasn't sure if they were contractions, my SO seen my crying for 30 min straight and said were going weather i like it or not. So we get their around 5am and they hooked me up to monitors and i was indeed having contractions, 1 min apart! I wasn't dilating at all though... i walked and such but after like 4 hrs they checked me again and i still wasn't dilating. So the dr said come back when there 4-5 min apart... (basically what i was feeling this morning) But how am i gonna know if its time ? How am i gonna know if I'm dilated this time? (we don't live that close the hospital) and I'm still contracting (have been all day) and been having horrible back pains. . but now there less intense and not as frequent... But I'm still confused as when to go back since they were a min apart and i wasn't dilating...

FTM and I'm 37wks almost 38
advice?

So main thing about contractions is that if they are increasing in frequency, intensity, and duration and contraction continue even with activity (don't get better with activity) Anytime you think you might be in labor just give your doc a call. They really don't mind and our understanding since you are almost there. Sounds like your body might be almost ready to go into labor. Remember to have someone time it for you because it might be easier.http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/laborbasics/ht/timectx.htm
link on how to time.

yea they gave me info on how to time them, and she said i came in at a good time, just unfortunately i wasn't dilating, so they were real contractions. But for some reason i wasn't dilating with them. . so how am i going to know when to go back lol if i have contractions like that again, how will i know if I'm dilating and its time for labor lol. Like I'm confused (FTM)

& I'm still having them, but there less frequent and not even half as painful ..
Is LO on her way???

YESS it is lol. they never told me if i was effaced or not. But they said i wasnt dilated at all. But i was having real contractions the dr said, he was suprised how well i was doing since i was having one every minut. He said i was in early labor and i could have the baby within a hour or a week. :/ so im not sure if i should be expecting her this week or not.

I would call again when you are having consistent, and painful contractions 5 min apart. Then the nurse will direct you further. Since you are having true contractions it is important to at least call doc. You might have to be sent up to hospital and checked out and then sent home, but at least you wont be having a baby at home :) I think your baby is coming soon, but if you don't start dilating they might put you on medicine to help you, but that depends on how far along you are and if the doctor thinks it is necessary. I am hoping for sooner rather than later!

thanks hun :)
me too. My nephews only in town till the 16th and I'm hoping my little girl gets here before then so he can meet her. Ive read you can be in early labor for weeks though, is this true? My contractions are inconsistent now, but are starting to get more painful. I planned on calling before i went in since we don't live that close to the hospital once there 5min apart. So if I continue to have contractions with no dilation they'll give me medicine to help me dilate?? I'm 37 weeks almost 38 btw :)

Unfortunately, you can be in early labor for a while :( but usually when it is consistent it can be an indication that the time is near. I don't believe that they would do any kind of inducing for you until 39 weeks unless the baby's health or your health was at risk. After 39 weeks, talk to your doctor about inducing and get doctor recommendation on it. I was induced at 39+4 with the doctor saying it was perfectly fine.

:x
lol well they deff were real contractions and if i dont transition into "active labor" before my drs appointment wich is on friday im deffinatly going to bring it to her attention. the checking of dilation is painful though.

I just wish LO would hurry up and get here. my nephew wants to meet her.
do you think i can be in early labor that long??

I never got to experience the early labor contractions that you are. (though i did dilate at 37 weeks to 2 cm and did nipple stimulation the night before inducement I went to 3 cm and according to monitor i was having contractions but i couldn't feel them) Since I haven't experienced it, i can't really advise too much on the length. What I have read is hours to days. Let's hope your body works with you and pops out a baby soon!!

Lol yea lets hope haha! I've read some women sayin they were in early labor for up to like a week and a half .. Do u think nipple stimulation would work for me?? How do I do it

So some doctors say that sex and nipple stimulation can help with getting labor into action. If your doctor hasn't advised against it then have some sex. ( If you have problems having an orgasm during sex then also pleasure yourself if you aren't against it) Nipple stimulation is basically rubbing your nipples. I had my husband (I just had him do it like we do in foreplay, so it feels good too.) do it to me for like an hour or 2. It seemed like a long time, but I really wanted my body to be getting ready plus I enjoyed it. I think the longer you do it the more likely that it will help. Ask your doc or nurse if they want you to just to be on the safe side.

Lol yea I just had mfiance do it and then we had sex lol (tmi) online it says there's a hormone in semen that can get things going.. I try not to ask SO for it too much though because lately he says I'm just using him to get the baby here lol, but I told him to enjoy it now because after LO comes its gonna be a looong six weeks haha :P
