This is what I deal with. All day. Most days. It's awful. I feel like a crazy lady half the time and can't remember things I've been told. It's rather embarrassing sometimes.

What hurdles do you have out in public???

Faith has anxiety around other adults.

People are either rude when they dont understand her or do the "oh uh huh... huh huh.. okay" and she may not be able to talk but she is NOT mentally handicapped... She will repeat herself over and over if you do not respond in a way she knows you should.

She gets overstimulated and bounces... up and down. spins, sings dances. she loses control of herself.

What do you sense from the people around you when they look at you?

Some people will give me a look or nod that they get it but most people look at me like I have a disobedient 4 year old and thats far from the case. she listens VERY well, doesnt hurt people (except me during meltdowns), doesnt run off or climb on stuff....

faith had a strip laminated with food Velcroed on it in one spot in the kitchen. But now she can say basics and likes to get it herself.

I'm not going to lie it's a lot of work in the beginning. I use white backgrounds. Here I'll brb and show you a couple examples. The laminating paper I get is NOT THERMAL http://www.walmart.com/ip/Scotch-Self-Sealing-Laminating-Sheets-Letter-Size-25pk/14917598
I do 2 pictures at a time.

The only issues in public is the meltdowns when I am unable to understand what he wants and when a stranger comes up to his face and is just being nice and talking to him and he looses his temper because they are too close or they touched him on his back or shoulder. He lost it on this elderly lady (after I already asked her to please not put her face in his face) He smacked her and she got pissed off and said I needed to learn to control my child before someone sues me. I told her I asked you to not do that because he is "special" and doesnt like to feel confronted. She rolled her eyes and stormed off.

A lot of work is all ways done with the best intentions for my son. I will fly to another country to help him honestly. He is worth every thing I do and if this will at least help him communicate his needs with us then I will do it! This is a great idea!! :D

My son Rocco is extremely speech delayed & has sensory issues as well. He has speech therapy once a wk, as well as at his preschool once a wk. Then physical therapy every other wk. I can't even explain how frustrating it is, though it doesn't seem as severe as your story OP :( if anything remotely different happens in his routine, he freaks. He refuses to touch or eat depending on the texture. He can't be dirty. Ever.

Which is just a thick paper, laminated with a velcro strip on it.

Sorry to hear about your LO. It doesnt matter HOW severe it is, its still horrible. What may be easy for you to deal with may SUCK for me to deal with. We all have our different temperaments and OWN stuff in life. No need to compare in that way. I'm glad to hear Rocco has regular therapy. How old is he?
