I think I've figured this out, but wanted to get some more insight.

(names have been changed)

My name is Donna. My 1st cousin's name is Chandra.
My son's name is Fred.

How are Fred and Chandra related?? What do you call them?

I think 2nd cousins would be when Chandra has kids, then her kids will be 2nd cousins with my kids, right?

But right now, Fred and Chandra are 1st cousins, once removed .. right?

Here is the wiki page with some more info on definitions of cousins.

chandra and fred would be 2nd cousins since she is not his first.
her kids would be his 3rd cousins :)
or"cousin", "gross cousin" and "gross, gross cousin" haha

well according to that wiki link, Fred and Chandra would be 1st cousins once removed.

Donna and Chandra are 1st cousins.
Their kids would be 2nd cousins (but Chandra doesn't have kids yet)
Their grandkids would be 3rd cousins.

I'm surprised so many people got it wrong.

Term /Definition/ Example
First cousin The children of two siblings. Donna and Chandra are first cousins because their mothers were sisters.

Second cousin The children of two first cousins. Fred and Alexa are second cousins because Fred's mother, Donna, and Alexa's mother, Chandra, are first cousins

First cousin once removed
Two people for whom a first cousin relationship is one generation removed. Fred and his father's first cousin, Chandra, are first cousins once removed to each other. They are one generation removed from the common generational relationship between Fred's mother (Donna) and Chandra.

i dont get the removed part, why would anything be removed? lol
in germany they say
my mom uli and her moms sisters daughter marina are "cousinen", marina is my "gross cousine" (2nd cousin i assumed in english) her daughter is my "gross-gross cousine" and marina is Ems "gross-gross cousine".
i just assumed all that would apply to the states too since it has to do with blood doesnt it?

I guess the translation isn't direct then.

it's "once removed" because they are in a different generation.
My mom and her sister (my aunt) are in one generation.
Then their kids, me and my cousin (my aunt's daughter) are in the next generation.
Then our kids (my kids and my cousin's kids) are the generation after that.

So because I am first cousins (same generation) with my cousin (Donna and Chandra in the example).

Then Fred (my son) and Chandra (my 1st cousin) are in different generations, so they are first cousins, but once removed.

It's hard to explain. lol

and what makes it even more confusing is that I just have Finn call my cousins "aunty" .. haha

like "one step away" ..like if you made a chart and put each generation on one line, then they would be one line away from each other.

thats so unnecessarily complicated lol. In my family we keep it simple, we're just "cousins". If we share blood and love, we're family :)

lol. of course it is. I would just call people cousins too. I was just wondering this because I'd never figured it out before.

I actually have my son call them his aunts.

I had no idea. I totally don't do the 1/2/3/4 cousin thing. Jordan has cousins his age. They are considered our kids aunts/uncles and his aunt is their grandma.
