A friend of mine has been TTC. She got a positive test April 7th. She went to the Dr on Wednesday and found out that her embryo never formed. I asked about her meds since she takes adderall and said she was still taking it and that her Dr told her it was OK but everything I've read said its a class C drug.... could that have caused her embryo to stop developing?

idk but i used to be on it when i wasTTC and never got pregnant... then i stopped taking it because i didn't think it would be safe when i did get pregnant especially in the early stages, and bam i got pregnant a month or so after stopping...

That probably didn't cause it. If the embryo didn't even develop then there was never an umbilical cord which is how any meds she was taking would get to the baby, so I doubt that caused. That just happens sometimes. :(

I'm pretty sure amphetamine is horrible for when you're pregnant. just like how methamphetamine would be.
I think she should stop taking Adderall while TTC and while she is pregnant.

Adderall can cause problems in pregnancy and it is highly likely that it had something to do with the miscarriage. It's much more dangerous than most people realize. It is after all, almost pure amphetamine.

It was not the Adderall. The studies that have been done showing possible teratogentic effects were not done on humans and they were much, much higher doses than she was likely taking. Miscarriage is so, so common - especially that early that the likelihood that Adderall caused it is next to nil. Women get pregnant on Adderall all the time and some even continue to use during pregnancy. My psychiatrist, while he could not recommend it for early pregnancy, did recommend it for the second trimester. I do stop taking Adderall before I have an embryo transfer but my last pregnancy was spontaneous and achieved while on Adderall. I wasn't even supposed to be able to get pregnant lol.

ETA just read the OP again. That sounds like a blighted ovum and therefore the cause would most likely be chromosomal and certainly not be related to Adderall.

I know about the effects of teratogenics and with that said the same can be said about adderall and her dose is very high.

There is no way you can say for sure that "it was not the adderall". There is no way to know for sure and spreading incorrect(possibly deadly) information on a pregnancy site is irresponsible. Could you link me to these studies you speak of? I'd love to read them.

It's one of those drugs that usually does not have benefits that outweigh risks to pregnancy.

The studies are not available online but are quoted and referred to in numerous places. The studies they refer to found that Adderall did not prevent embryonic development, as with a blighted ovum. I would be very curious to see even mention of studies showing that Adderall could be the primary contributor to an early pregnancy loss. Even if it was proven to be unsafe in humans, it still would not compare to the natural miscarriage rate in women, sometimes reported to be as high as 50%. And while there are no actual studies on humans in pregnancy, because women routinely conceive while taking Adderall and are not aware they are pregnant before the onset of organogenesis, it would be more than possible to study a link between Adderall and early pregnancy loss if such a link existed.

I'm not arguing for Adderall's safety in pregnancy. I am arguing for the sanity of that poor woman being told it is her fault for her pregnancy loss when it is far more likely not the case.
