With my last baby my midwife told me to do squats to help make baby engage to put me into labor, I was 39 weeks.

Three reasons.
It promotes flexibility of you hip joints.
Strengthens your pelvic floor.
Helps stretch your pelvic opening for when baby engages.

I've also heard it can help prevent perineum tears but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

I think if you were active and doing them pre-pregnancy and such, you should be fine.

Not from everything I have read about it. You can google "squats during pregnancy" for articles on it I'm sure. I just wouldn't use weights while you do it. :)
