My son was born at 34 weeks and spent a week in nicu, he was totally fine until we got home. The first week he started throwing up like not spit up but throwing up atleast half the bottle then he started to not eat it was taking him 45 min to take an ounce. We took him into the hospital where we were admitted for 3 days. They thought it was an infection and did tests and he was hooked up to iv for antibiotics. All test came back negative so dr said whatever he had was gone and we went home. The last couple of days have been hell. Our poor baby is soo uncomfortable. He eats, then for a good hour its spitting up and hes pushing down like he has to poo and grunting like crazy. He will only sleep on my chest and hes waking up crying like he has a bad gut ache. He poo is normal but sometimes the puke looks likeold formula. He burps alot and there usually loud and followed by curdeled spit up. We also tried a sensitive formula and it constipated him. I feel so bad for the little guy. Does this seem like gerd?

its possible but I would definitely take him into a doctor preferably a pediatrician or to the childrens hospital (I see you live in Calgary) If it is GERD there is medication (ranitidine) that can help

Sounds like reflux to me. My son was diagnosed only a few weeks old. Can't fathom what the vomiting was from. Its possible he did have an infection they couldn't detect and with reflux; lets just say when my son has the stomach flu at a month old, it was no walk in the park. He puked up every bottle plus some (i swear he had an ocean's worth of formula in his belly somewhere) for 2 days and then slowed down but still vomited for another two days after we were discharged from peds. Ask the pedi about reflux. I called frantic one night when he was a couple weeks old and told the on call nurse his symptoms and she said over the phone...id almost bet thats what it is; call the doctor on monday. make an appointment and try not to worry. It sounds like reflux. Reflux hurts; but won't hurt him. Comfort him and try and get some rest. Call back if he gets a fever or bla blah bla. They are usually good about diagnosing it. Good luck m'am. Its hard to deal with but reflux seldom lasts forever.

yeah it sounds alot like GERD. My daughter is on Axid and Levson (for stomach cramps). Zantac didn't work, prevcaid worked for awhile, but then she changed to these 2 and they seem to be working the best!

My son is on zantac 1.5 ml but its not working for us either. The doctor mention ed to my SO at the appt I couldn't make while I was at work (I need to have him tape record these conversations) something about a medicine for the reflux pain. My sister was told they only do one REFLUX medicine. Is that levson the kind that makes babies kinda sedate for lack of a better word? my sister didn't sleep when she was a baby, at all. They gave my mom levson drops and it worked wonders. Just wondering what it did for your LO?

Levson can make them sleepy but listen she was screaming for 7 hours straight before this and finally she is just a normal baby she gets up around 2 times a night for a feeding (she is breastfed) but goes to bed around 9 pm and sleeps til 9 am now :) She doesn't scream anymore! And they can try different medicine. If Zantac doesn't work I would try Prilosec or Prevacid

Levson is not available in Canada from my experience working in a pharmacy a preemie is started on Zantac dosed as per their weight and if that does not work there are other options but I did not see many other options used.

No we do not have that either, nor do we have OTC prevacid we are very limited on what we have available and most of it is not recommended for kids under 12 without seeing the dr

the office wont do anything but zantac, and they are just treating the pain and keeping him on zantac. If it makes him sleepy, can he get it at night and it will last like 12 hrs or whatever, through part of the day? how were you dosed? My son stands all day long in our laps at 4 mo old. If he isn't standing, he is standing and screaming. Terrible posture issues from this reflux. :( I TOTALLY GET IT!! I think the sleepiness might be worth him not being in pain.

you can give it every 4 hours as needed but I try to only give it at night and after a couple of days I didn't have to give it as often.

what my daughter takes is prescription only. We have the OTC stuff but I wouldn't ever give it to my kid :) I wonder why they don't offer these drops.
