Stripping Membranes Mama to A & R ♥ Due January 22 (boy); 1 child; California 778 posts

At my 38 week appointment I was 1cm and 50% effaced, and have my 39 week appointment tomorrow. Can I ask for my doctor to strip my membranes? I know you have to be dilated, is 1cm enough? I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I've lost my mucus plug and when I got checked the doctor could feel the babies head. He also told me my cervix is very soft and center.

And has anyone found this to be effective? How dilated/effaced were you? And how long after did you go into labor?

With my 3rd my midwife tried this, I was overdue (Or so they thought) I found it painful and unhelpful, And i was induced the follwing week via drip.

They never told me if i was dialated at the time, Or how effaced i was, Just said they'd give it a whirl to try and get things going.

I was 1.5cm and not effeaced at all when my Dr stripped my membranes at 39 weeks...I didn't go into labour for almost a week after.

My midwife stripped my membranes when I was 38 weeks 5 days. I went into labor 2 days later. Oh, and I was 3 cm dialated and 90% effaced.

I really want them to try, because I'm trying my hardest to avoid induction. They wanted to induce me at 39 weeks (tomorrow) but I've gotten them to hold off until at least 40 weeks. When I walk I get contractions, but then they go away after I stop. Drives me crazy! lol

I was 2cm dilated and 90% effaced when I had my membranes stripped the first time. Nothing happened. The next week, I was still 2cm dilated and 90% effaced, had my membranes stripped and was having contractions by the time I left the doctor's office. I was 38 weeks and 3 days. I labored for forty-one hours though, so I didn't give birth until 38 weeks and 5 days, but I was certainly in labor. Lost my mucus plug that night (think I was losing chunks by the time I got home from the appointment, actually).

Go ahead and ask your doctor, they'll either say no, do it and have nothing happen, or they'll do it and you'll go into labor.

Good luck!

Did you have to ask your doctor? And did you have any contractions prior to getting them stripped?

I'll just have to ask him. Hopefully he won't have a problem with it. I have a feeling he'll turn me down though. But he was talking about an early induction and I got him to lay off finally last week. So we'll see. I'll try to natural early induction first, lol.

I just went for my regular appointment, she checked me for dilation, and she just told me she was stripping them. I never asked her, and it didn't hurt at all...And no, I wasn't having any contractions prior, or even after...Just braxton hicks.

I was 4 cm. and 90% effaced when I had my membranes stripped. It sent me into false labor, which reeeally hurt. I cried on the way home. I was induced a week later.

As long as your cervix admits one finger then a stretch and sweep is possible, I'm also due the 19th and my midwife will be doing a stretch and sweep of my membranes on Saturday, so am REALY hoping it brings on labor as I have been 50% effaced and dilated 1cm from 36 weeks already, I want my baby boy here already ;)

Good luck! Let me know if it puts you into labor! I'm really hoping my OB is open to the idea. I really want to try this, instead of going with his idea to do a medical induction.

Well i guess it's worth a try if you want to avoid induction, But there is no garantee that it will work, So you may end up just uncomfortable and induced anyway, So just don't get your hopes up. Best of luck, I hope you can avoid being induced :)

Thats exactly why I want this done! I do not want to be induced, however my midwife will only talk about induction after 40 weeks, and a membrane sweep is a more natural way of induction- but it doesnt always work, let's hope ur doc does this for u' :)
