Nails peeling after HFMD? MamaCass{+JOE} 3 kids; 1 angel baby; Pennsylvania 42360 posts

Several days ago one of my daughter's fingernails peeled off at the base (right above the cuticle). There was new nail underneath it, and it didn't really seem to hurt her, but we couldn't figure out why she lost the nail to begin with. Today the same exact thing happened on a different finger.

I started freaking out and googling. At first I couldn't find anything that fit, but then I found a bunch of stuff about this happening after having Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease, which she had about a month ago.

Has anyone else's child(ren) experienced anything similar? I may call her pedi Monday morning just to confirm, but I feel much better knowing it could be from HFMD, vs. some kind of underlying health issue.

That really eases my mind a bit!! It still sucks, but at least I know it's probably from that, and not her thyroid or something like that.

Did the HFMD get treated w/ antibiotics? That's a side effect of a lot of antibiotics in children.

Its a virus and had to go away on its own, no antibiotics work.

Duh, I was totally thinking of strep (I don't know where my mind is tonight) I promise I'm a pediatric RN, lol. Yeah, that definitely happens after HFMD, usually within 4 weeks. It doesn't need additional treatment usually.
