Sandifer Syndrome or Seizures??? Amber0406 1 child; Indiana 125 posts

So Tuesday night I noticed my little girl (4 months) acting kinda weird. She would push her tongue to the front of her mouth and then her head would go back all the way. I watched her for a bit and she just kept doing it over and over. I looked like she was having small seizures. So of course I panic attack and stayed up all night watching her like a hawk and then took her to the doc yesterday morning. Her doc believes that it may be Sandifer Syndrome. Something about severe acid reflux that makes their behavior mimic a seizure??? He called and Ped. Neurologist and they agreed they wanted me to try a medicine for 24 hours. So I started her on it yesterday. They said if she has any "spells" today to take her straight to the ER where the Neurologist is and they would do testing for seizures. I'm so freaking out right now and praying that this medicine works. Anyway just wanted to know if any of you had ever heard of this before......and I just kinda needed to vent a little .....

I'm praying for your little one. I don't know anything about this but I know how scary it is I had a few scares like that when my son was acting funny and was young.

Acid reflux caused my son to have seizure like activity. They are very scary episodes my son was in the hospital for almost a week getting all kinds of testing done for seizures and they couldn't find anything wrong. So, after we were discharged from the hospital we had an appointment with the nureologist(sp) and she suggested that it might be from the reflux and his ped. put him on zantac twice a day and since we started it (knock on wood) he hasn't had any!!
Good luck & i'll be praying for both of you!! :)

Keep me updated please because I have never heard of acid reflux causing seizure like activity until my son and when I seen you post about it I was wondering if it could be the same thing going on!!

I will! When the doctor brought it up to me I was very skeptical. She doesn't act like she has reflux at all....she very rarely spits up, she's not fussy, she eats like a horse all the time and she gains weight great! Idk but I've been one freaked out momma! However it is a little comforting to know that someone else has experienced this and it wasn't seizures!

So last night my LO had 4 spells. That was after 3 doses of the zantac. It was late and my older son was already asleep so we didn't take her to the er then.....waiting til she wakes up this morning and then heading that way. The neurologist is about an hour from where we live. God please let this not be seizures................

Quick update on my little one.....We went to the doc yesterday and they ordered an upper gi study. My little one didn't do so well...she absolutely refused to drink the barium crap from their bottle....after what seemed like forever I finally convinced the tech to let me try it out of one of her bottles. I got barely anything down her and she was screaming so hard the radialogist was afraid she was going to vomit so she said was done. So from what the little she was able to see it didn't appear there was any reflux at that specific time. So went back to her doc and I was able to show her a video of the "spells" my daughter is having.....her doc said she was confident that it was not seizures so she doesn't feel an EEG test is needed at this time and is still insistent that it's acid. So she switched her from Zantac to Prilosec and wants me to try it for a week then take her back for a re evaluation.
