This is my first baby (I have two adopted daughters) and I m 38 weeks. Will pain medication really be needed or should I birth naturally? How was the level of pain for you guys? I know everyone is different and can take pain differently, but I'd still like your opinion. Thanks.

Its a personal choice. If you don't want pain meds then don't use them. I decided not to, but ended up using some. Just be open to options in case you can't handle it. Just remember that no matter what hour delivery is yours

I have tried to go all natural with both of mine bet kept the option open for epidural. And I ended up getting it both times because the pain gets too intense for me to handle on my own.

I think you should plan for natural but keep other options open because you never know what will happen:)

Thank you so much. I agree that I should keep my options open.

I went in wanting natural. I made it to 8 cm with only a bit of Nubain to help me rest in between contractions since they were 1-3 minutes apart my WHOLE labor (it was because my water broke...) and then I got en epidural, and they checked and I was 8 cm! :D I was crying at that point with contractions that were one after the other. I was ready for it to be OVER...I actually asked for a repeat c-section. it didn't click in my head that I was in transition. LOL. Most women want to give up in transition. I was proud of myself for getting through 12 hours of hard labor without an epidural AND I couldn't walk around either because my son kept having D-Cells in his heartrate, so I had to stay in bed...at one point I was like...I need to get off of this bed. I can't do this in bed...then I got an internal monitor for his heartrate (which I didn't want initially, but I needed OFF the bed) and was able to stand and move around and lean over the bed at least. I don't regret anything and am proud I made it so far naturally! With my first I got an epidural at 4 cm! Be open to options like someone else said but make your own decisions and don't let them talk you into anything! They tried to talk me into a repeat c-section because of my weight, risk of uterine rupture (I was a VBAC) and since I was having a big baby - estimated over 10 pounds, the risk of shoulder dystocia...I would call my labor pretty 'easy' and wonderful after the epidural! lol. It only took me an hour after the epi, and I was able to be rested to push. I pushed maybe twice? or so once his head was crowning...Doctor goes ok two more pushes to get his shoulders out...I pushed once and he BARELY caught him...so much for shoulder dystocia! also my kid was 9 pounds 4 oz...and I never tore and wasn't cut. :D I did what I felt was right and was rewarded. :D

i used an epidural, and i'll be using it again. if done right, you wont experience really any pain, and it made my labor very enjoyable.
