RA vs. Fibromyalgia? DescendedDelight TTC since Nov 2012; 1 child; Addison, Texas 18697 posts

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis about 6 months ago, but as my symptoms get more severe and other things are happening to my body I feel like I may actually have Fibromyalgia instead of RA...
I have muscle/joint pain almost daily.
IBS.
Migraines at least twice a week, random pain around my ribcage.
Horrible sleep patterns.
Memory issues, problems concentrating.
Loss of coordination, restless leg syndrome.

I also have a long standing history of anxiety and depression.
Worst of all today I am extremely fatigued. It was difficult enough to get up to the bathroom, let alone eat anything.

My questions:

Is it possible to have both?
Have you been misdiagnosed as one and ended up actually having the other?
And..how do I get my doctor to consider this a possibility? The last time I talked to her about it she didn't take me seriously.

Halp? :\

It was the pain around the ribcage that started it. Fibromyalgia feels, at least for me, like a hot pain that migrates. I also have severe fatigue and restless legs, especially at night. Fibromyalgia isn't something you can 'see' on tests, but RA, there are tests than can show presence of the disease. I don't see why you couldn't have both. I wish you luck!

Thanks ladies.
I'm going in on Monday to try and get my doctor to listen this time, hopefully she does.

it took me 3 years to get my fibro diagnosis,as well as 2 mri's, bone scans, many specialists and two different healthcare providers many doctors don't believe in fibro so don't be too upset if she doesn't believe that's it.

They are related to each other, from what I understand. Often someone who has Fibro will later develop RA.

I have similar symptoms and my mother has both, her mother has both as well. I am worried I may have both, like Philosoraptor said I get a burning type pain but it's more so a constant pain that migrates from two joints in my arm or leg, to the arm or leg on the same side of my body usually. Say it starts in my shoulder and radiates to my wrist, later that day it will be in my leg on the same side of the body as where it started.

I've had that pain since I was a child, back then I thought it was the growing pains everyone talked about but it's only gotten worse and i'm 22 now. I have a history of migraines and headaches, I get sharp shooting pain under my breasts/rib cage randomly and have since I was a child. I have problems concentrating when it comes to certain things but I don't know if that's part of it. I get tired as well, it's worse of course when pregnant but when I'm not pregnant it's still hard to do daily activities much less take care of my children.

I've been needing to see my regular doctor and get checked out, talk about things. I hope they take me seriously...don't you hate it when you don't get taken seriously by your doctor? What else are you supposed to do then, see a different one I guess. It is good to get second, third, or however many opinions you need. They first thought my mom had Lupas, then she was diagnosed with the Fibro. Good luck hun!

How were you diagnosed with RA? And sure it's possible to have both. RA is an autoimmune disease. I have a lot of the issues you mentioned with my RA, one thing you can always tell if something is RA related is it will be mirror pain. I think I have another form of arthritis in my hip and hand, but I can ALWAYS tell a difference between RA and the other one. It will be mirrored in the other whatever is hurting, and dull, burning, stiff pain. Fibro is often very hard to diagnose. I first was convinced I had it, and years complaining to drs and being told it was because I was fat, so nicer words, I gave up until I started seeing my nephrologist. My first appointment after the symptoms he did a few physical tests in office then said he was 99% sure it was RA, but he'd do a blood test so he could diagnose 100%. I feel better knowing it wasn't in my mind, but sometimes I still want more answers, and I have more going on than simple RA, well as simple as RA can be.

Yoga!!
My dad's mom had Fibro and RA, so did my dad. Both died of the diseases. Neither exercised or ate healthy.
I have had markers for fibro, but since doing yoga and exercising regularly, and changing my diet, my symptoms have disappeared. I lived years with pain that was increasing...and now I've been pain free for at least 5 years. I'm determined to beat the odds.
:)

They ran blood tests and I guess drew from all my symptoms. I didn't even know what Fibromyalgia consisted of until I googled everything I was feeling around a month ago and I was shocked that they even made sense.
