Could something be wrong if my 1 yr old sleeps too much? Alicia14 Due November 30; 1 child; Ventura, CA, United States 824 posts

My son sleeps 13-14 hours a night. This morning he still isn't awake and he's going on 15 hours. He didn't nap for crap yesterday so maybe this is why. But I'm wondering if sleeping a lot could be a sign of a deficiency or disease or something? Any of your 13 month olds sleep like this or is my kid just a lazy bum and I should stop worrying and be grateful?

It can be a symptom of a medical issue or it could be normal. If you're worried about a medical issue, there's usually other symptoms to watch out for along with it.

You just said he didn't nap yesterday. Makes sense he may sleep a little longer.

He doesn't have a disease. Don't be silly.

that's a good question and i've often wondered that. my DD is 16 months now and whenever she was around 10-14 months her sleeping was insain. she slept all night and half the day. but she still sleeps about 12 hours a night and lately it's been longer. and she take one 2-3 hour long nap everyday and sometimes she'll take two naps or go to bed two hours early.
i was told by my MIL that its fine. she runs around allot when she's awake, and baby's sleep scheduals are all different... but i still worry.

Average for that age is 9-12 hours with a nap so I wouldn't be worried

He sleeps 13-14 hours regardless of whether he's napped well or not. But he did switch himself to 1 nap right around his birthday, so it's only been a month, maybe he's still adjusting.

My husband tells me I'm a worry wart. I know I am, but I can't help it!!!

If she didnt nap yesterday than I would expect her to get a little extra sleep, babies need a lot more sleep than adults do.

My kids are all big now (12,10,7 and 6) But they have always slept pretty decent hours my younger ones sleep from 7:30pm - 7am, And my older 2 from 9pm - 7am, They'll all sleep later if allowed, But they all have school lol
They've always slept a good 12 hours at least since they were little tikes, So i wouldn't worry about it, Alot happens while they sleep, If you are really worried, Just asked your healthnurse or doctor.

He may just be feeling a little under the weather. I know when my kids aren't feeling too chipper, they like to sleep a little more than usual. As long as he is eating and drinking alright, giving wet diapers and such, he should be okay. I know when my oldest got ear infections, he would sleep in in the mornings, take naps (which is odd for him since he normall doesn't take one any more), and was just lethargic and didn't want to do much of anything. He also may be just catching up on his sleep, or could be going through a growth spurt. :)

Like what other symptoms? I told his Doc at his 12 mo apt that he slept 13 hours sometimes more and he didn't seem to be concerned. He was a terrible sleeper from 4 1/2 months to 6 months, maybe this is his way of making it up to me!?

I know if they have random high fevers for no apparent reason and sleep a lot or seem tired all the time it can be indicative of certain types of cancers. I don't think sleeping a lot by itself is neccesarily and issue but I'm not a doctor!!

No fevers or anything. In fact other than just being crabby a lot (possibly teething) he seems to be fine. I will call and talk to a nurse on Monday!

at 12 months he should be averaging 14 hours, a little more or a little less is not usually cause for concern. And if he doesnt always over sleep than again I would not be concerned, it could be a growth spurt, a busy day, maybe he tossed and turned for awhile so he didnt sleep well.
Unless he is sleeping more than 15 hours every day, I dont think there is a problem, but Im not a doc so, JMO

I started to get worried after 15 1/2 hours so I went in to wake him up! Sure enough he was just snoozing away! Now I gotta figure out whether to feed him breakfast or lunch! LOL
