It sounds like your LO is going through a growth spurt. Hang in there if you can, it really does get better. I wouldn't try a nipple shield right away, but I would use it as a last resort. We had to use one and it took six months to get DD to nurse without it.

Oh, and the Ameda gel pads were a lifesavor! I'm pretty sure you can get them at Target, but they're kind of pricey. http://www.amazon.com/Ameda-17261M-ComfortGel-Hydrogel-Pads/dp/B003IP2L38

Quoting Becky☮Will:" I wouldnt try that unless you absolutely need to. I have heard girls on here talk about it actually messing up their LOs latch even worse and never being able to breastfeed normally again :( "

:!: Definitely dont do the nipple shield. It causes confusion. I was forced to use it and now LO refuses my nipple. The LC told me that it will probably take over a month to wean him off of it. My nips are bruised and beaten even with the nipple shield.

If you absolutely need to, talk to an LC about getting an SNS feeder. You might be able to hold the tube next to your nipple and let your LO get formula and breastmilk at the same time.

I'm glad he's growing so well!!! I'm sorry BFing is so rough right now. Hopefully he gets through the growth spurt and things get a little easier!

My daughter will be 3 weeks on Tuesday and for the first 6 days my nipples were dry, cracked and bleeding. I was so close to throwing in the towel but I wanted to breast feed this baby so bad since I couldn't with my first 2. I just toughed it out and used tons of lanolin cream till they healed. My daughter also cluster feeds and sometimes I have to supplement with formula just to give my breasts a break because they get so tender and sore. Good luck Mama!!
