My oldest was writing her name out at 3. She also could write out mommy, daddy, and Scarlett (sister.) She is now 4 1/2 and can write lots of names and words and is showing major interest in reading so we have started that with her as of last week. I honestly think it's because she was in preschool just before she turned 3. I definitely think a child is capable of writing their name out at 21/2-3. Last year in class all of DD1's classmates were able to write their name and some were still not quite 3.

Honestly, I think she could have started reading earlier but with my DH working out of town most of the time and having a baby.. my time just wasn't there. She is a smart cookie though and really loves to learn. ALLLL day she asks me how to spell random words lol. AND she remembers and will write them on her school work.

That's awesome.

My favorite thing to do with mine is to label everything in the house for common sight words.

Fridge
stove
Window
wall etc.....it helped a lot for both of them. So they see the word on the object every day. Including their dresser drawers for pants shirts panties etc....every so often I change the labels and misspell the words and see how long it takes them to notice, its really fun lol
