How did you know? MunchkinWrangler 4 kids; Rīga, Latvia 46816 posts

How did you know that you were done having kids?
When did you take the plunge into getting a vasectomy for your husband, or getting your tubes tied?

Right now I know that I don't want any more kids any time soon.
I really think I would be fine with three kids, period.
BUT- I can't stop worrying about the possibility that I will want a child in the future and not be able to. Once my youngest is off to Kindergarten, my feelings may change, you know?

However, I am having a hard time with birth control. We absolutely can not have another child right now. At LEAST for 2 more years... and I can't remember to take my pill. My body didn't cope well with an IUD so I'm not sure that I want another... and the shot made me wicked emotional. I also am not okay with the Implanon. I can't even handle a shot... I can't take other methods as I am breastfeeding. I'm just really worried that I'll end up getting pregnant which is making me think of more permanent options.

What was the deciding factor for you?

If you're not 100% sure, you probably shouldn't do anything permanent.

We knew we were done after 2 before we even started. We had been discussing it for years. We can not maintain the lifestyle we have and provide for their futures with more than 2.

We also have a theory that the kids should never outnumber the parents, lol

I have the same problem. So does Dh. We always said 3 but now we think MAYBE 4. But we aren't going to discuss the possibility until our youngest is 2. I do know that after my 4th or after my oldest turns 8 years old I am done which ever comes first.

We just had our third.. and I'm content with this amount of children... but the thought of never having a little baby again scares me. Leaving the hospital when LO was born I kept bawling thinking that it was our last experience with child birth and bringing a baby home. LOL. Stupid, I know...

I feel like we shouldn't have more because we want to be able to travel with our kids and do things with them- but if we keep having babies it will tie us down. Plus, I have to finish my degree and need to set that time aside.

BUT- we are looking into building a new home or buying a newer home... which would have an extra bed room. See where this is heading?!Oh lord....

You are so young that I would not recommend anything too permanent. I would revisit the discussion of a vasectomy in five years.

But I see your conflict. Three kids is a lot and you said you want to travel and get a degree. Traveling is expensive and how far are you from finishing your degree?

Only 4 classes away from my degree. I've switched degree programs a million times... I have enough credits for two. Ha. I just haven't been able to really focus on my career. I've been focused on the kids. It would be nice for a change to get to focus on ME.

I feel like waiting five years is a good idea... however, in the past 5 years I've been pregnant 4 times. That's enough time to have 4 more kids if I continue on this stint of forgetting birth control.

Have you thought about tracking your cycle and avoiding your ovulation days? And while I'm not a proponent of the pull out method, I have heard that it works, lol.

What would you do if you did get pregnant again too soon?

We do pull out. Lately our sex life has sucked because we are rarely having sex, due to me forgetting the pill. Sometimes we cave though. I always remember to take it- just not at the right time.I'm always a couple hours off. :(

If I got pregnant right now I'd be really unhappy but we could make it work. I think if I got pregnant right now I'd most definitely get my tubes tied, though. We are just going through a lot right now, so it's not a good time for it.

i know im done at 2.

the world caters to a families with 2 kids and 2 parents. we'll be able to give our two children soooo much more than if we had 3+

the deciding factor for me was we got our boy and girl and we want to be able to give them the best life possible. that might not be possible with more children. that probably didnt make sense sorry, haha.

with our two kids traveling is totally possible and affordable. one adult for each kid. we've taken them to disney world twice, barbados, ireland, all around new england... etc.

A couple hours off shouldn't make a difference unless you are on the mini-pill. I would also try spermicide, unless that stings.

But I can definitely understand being worried especially if you are in a delicate situation.

It's the mini-pill.. since I'm breastfeeding.
And thank you for posting this because I just realized I forgot to take it AGAIN. The alarm mode on my phone doesn't work, and I always put it somewhere I will see it... but I still forget it.

I don't dare use spermicide. I'm very sensitive even to soaps... so I'd worry about getting a bad reaction to it.

Do you get up around the same time every morning? When I was on BC, I would set my alarm and wake up, regardless of the day, and chug down that pill.

And I don't blame you about the spermicide. From what I've heard, the stuff can really irritate the skin. Ouch.

Yes... but on the weekends I always sleep in... so I'll never remember on the weekends if I take it when I get up!!
