Yeah i wanted to study midwifery in a couple of years but ended up pregnant, again! I would get so bored staying home forever

That kind of sounds close to our child tax benefits we get here.
We have chid tax benefits then we have baby bonus that you recieve till your child turns six yrs of age.
But its not for SAHM's it's for anyone who makes less then 35,000 a year.
And you only lose one of them when your child turns six, the extra $100.00 a month. Our school aged kids here go at 4 yrs old, but it stops at 6 yrs old.
I think personally that if you are a SAHM and you cant survive without getting assistance you should be going to work every day to care and support your children and yourself. Its no one elses job to feed and clothes the kids.
But here everyone is entitled to recieve those handouts even if you are higher income, just the amount is not the same. Like an example, my parents were making 300,000 a year and still got baby bonus for me and my brother, it was only $150.00 for the both of us, but they still got it.
Quoting ma ♥:" :!::!: Being a SAHM is a privilege, not a right!"
Tell that to the people on these boards! you will never win that on here people get all fired up when you suggest to them gee you shouldnt have kids if you can't afford to feed them lol
that sounds similar to ours. It's there to help out people who want to live the SAHP lifestyle. We get 2 different benefits. There is also the universal benefit which is meant to go towards child care monthly, to help parents who want to work.
Quoting TheNuge:" Excellent. Here if you have a foot problem you may be able to get the system to declare you disabled and eligible for years of governemnt support. it may be for the rest of your life. "
Thats some bullshit too! I am sorry. My mother has had 2 knee, neck and hand surgeries and she stil works. Please please do not get me started on the SSDI etc here..That needs to have a huge over haul!!
Yes, of course they should have to work. Staying home is a luxerie not a right. Let me get his straight, while the child is in school.. mom still gets paid to do pretty much nothing? no way, lol
I think this is exactly what happens when government over extends itself.
I guess it's running out of money?
Besides, the government subsidzing your income because you've had a baby (aside what you, yourself have paid into any kind of maternity leave) is ludicrous.
Can't afford that baby? Don't have one. Sorry.

Everyone gets a family tax benefit here too based on income, it goes down the more you earn. I just pulled the figures down off the Internet and I'll try to explain as best I can.
There are 2 parts to it; part A, can earn $47000 (per family or single) a year, then it gets reduced. I believe it's something like $100,000 is when you aren't eligible for that one. Part B, the primary earner can earn $150,000 a year before you are eligible for nothing.
Now the baby bonus has been $5000 for each child. They're just about to change it to $5000 first child, $3000 for subsequent children. People have been going nuts over that, too. Also, there is a paid parental leave scheme, you may be eligible for 18 weeks pay at minimum wage, if you earn less than $150,000. You can only claim one of them, but either way you get help.
So the parenting payment is totally different on TOP of all of that. That's a little tricky to explain.
It's insane that people would complain about getting money for nothing but that's Australia for you.

You know what's crazy, is the baby bonus was announced to boost population.... I can't remember how long it's been going. So there were and are still a lot of teen pregnancies as a result, other people just having babies to stay on benefits. People see a lump sum and get the bling $$ in their eyes... they don't think about the big picture, the cost of raising the child for the next 18 years.
I don't think the government actually thought it through. lol.
Staying at home is a privilege, not a right. If you can't afford a sahp without government assistance, then you need to work.
Australians are super spoiled.

i think its stupid to say people get pregnant for the baby bonus, yes they probably did when the government was giving it in lump sums (i had a friend complain that they dont do it in lump sums anymore cos she wanted to buy a car) i couldnt care less how much it is, i dont need it but it is pretty helpful to stock up on nappies, formula ect.
Uh...yeah. There's no reason to stay home when your kids are in school if you can't afford it by yourself.
You guys are lucky to get 6 years though, damn.

They give you money for having a baby?
Oh how I am SO GLAD they don't do that here. You know how over populated the united states would be? OMG.
Quoting FroggysMommy:" You shouldn't be basically paid to stay at home. That being said... if I work too much I lose our ... [snip!] ... them too because some of those families really would be better off to stay at home and not work. The system needs to be fixed."
I agree with you, I believe everybody should get some sort of BASIC medical care, dentistry included.
I work a full time job & I make too much to qualify for medi-cal (medicaid). My tooth has been annoying me for the past few months but I just can't see spending over 400 to see a dentist right now. It just sucks not having any dental coverage. You would think my job would offer some sort of dental coverage, especially considering I WORK for the government. SMH oh the irony.
