Hitting your kid to teach him not to hit. Seems legit. =|

I don't think "beating" or spanking is working. Hitting a dog with a stick? Did you ask him why he would want to do something like that?

Which is particularly why I don't do it.

How about talking to him about why he did that to the dog? Find a way to redirect whatever he's feeling. Give him a little responsibility. "We can't hurt the dog. We have to take care of him. It can be your job to feed him/brush him/whatever you choose." And give him praise for the times he's behaving appropriately.

No, actually I didn't.

Spanking a kid to teach a kid not to hit is completely counterproductive. They learn from you. You're hitting them but telling them it's wrong to hit.

Try talking to him to figure out why he's hitting. Reward him for being good. Teach him that good behavior gets recognized. He may just be feeling left out with an infant in the house and he knows he can get your attention by being bad.
