I have been pumping every 2-3 hours, drinking lots of water and eating healthy to try to get a good supply in. My daughter is 1 week old, so I pump when she sleeps since she sleeps for most of the day at this point. When I pump, I can usually only get about 2 ounces per breast if I'm lucky. Does this sound normal? It feels like I'm not producing enough. When your child was this young, how much were you expressing? I am not primarily breastfeeding because I am going back to work soon. I just hope I will be producing more when she is older so I can keep up with her needs. Any suggestions as to how to get a better supply in please let me know, and if this is normal and I'm just over thinking this, please let me know that also.
Try nursing her more instead of pumping for a while.
Sounds like you're doing everything right. Your body will produce as much as the baby needs, the more you express the more you will produce. When you do pump, try to do so in a quiet, calm place. Having a picture of your baby to look at is supposed to also help. But if your LO is only a week old, she's probably only eating 2oz or so at a time, she's still so small. As she gets bigger she'll need more, so your body will make more. Keep drinking lots of fluids, eat a healthy diet, feed/pump regularly and you'll be surprised how much you're expressing soon enough. Good luck, mama!
can still only get about 2-3oz out hen pumping and DS is nearly 5 months old. Pumping is no indication of supply and not getting much is perfectly normal, you're body wasn't designed to nurse something plastic and it doesn't trigger the same hormone response, but saying that if you pump regulatory enough and for long enough so can successfully express feed.
Just keep pumping. EBF babies usually feed on average every 2 hours, so pump every 2 hours, or if she eats 2oz, pump 2oz so you can keep up with her. Warm compresses/warm shower/warm bath can help your milk flow, as can massaging your breasts in a downward motion (kinda like coaxing the milk to your nipples,) and oatmeal and supplements can be taken that have been shown to help with supply.
Thank you everyone!!
They say the first two weeks you only produce enough to fill this. If you're getting more then you're fine!!!!
Your doing better than I did, I was only able to get 1oz per side and never any more. I was only able to pump and ended up drying up in a month. Like someone else said, less pumping if possible would be better for your production.
