Tyson wanted to find 683 minus 152. He started by finding 6 minus 5. Tell what Tyson did wrong.

Ok so my neice is doing her homework, asked her dad, who asked my husband and we all disagree on the answer. What do you think he did wrong?

(I think for a 2nd grade question it's going to be easier than they are thinking- thy are completely thrown off and I think it's as easy as starting from the left instead of right and not having the columns lined up right. Am I wrong?)

That's what I would think. But as adults we overthink crap!

Nope sounds right to me...you work from right to left and you have to have all the places lined up (ones, tens, hundreds, etc).

I feel like my BIL and DH are just trying to make it too difficult, it's 2nd grade! It has to be pretty obvious I would think

He subtracted the 10's place value from the hundreds place value.

Essentially, a 2nd grader would answer, "They didn't line up the place value and subtracted the wrong number."

The answer is you have to start from the right and work left.

They almost don't believe me! They think there is something more to it, they don't get that it's only 2nd grade leve
