I found this quote from the zoo president: "Railings throughout the zoo are designed to make it difficult to place children on them, Baker said. They're at a 45-degree angle so that if a child is placed on one and falls, he or she would hopefully fall backward, away from the animal enclosure, she said.

So I don't get it - did she have to make a big effort to heave him that far up - this article also states he fell into a safety net & then bounced out. :(

I think child endangerment resulting in the death of a dependent is fitting. Or again, negligent homicide because neglecting to protect her by putting her in danger lead to her death...

No ,I am NOT a mother, but that's not the point. My OP could have been written a little less emotionally, but my opinion is as valid as any.

What does her being the mother have to do with anything? Her actions caused the death of a child. Her relationship to that child shouldn't influence the consequences.

On ANOTHER note,it's pretty sad that I am the one dumber than rocks when no child ever in my care has been eaten alive through my own foolishness.I'm sure Mrs Derkosh will be competing for first place.

I also have to wonder what the mom's ethnicity is, etc. It seems to me that those things effect whether you end up charged or not AND how "PC" what you did is.

Here is a link for a woman, black, who had been drinking & then slept with her baby on a couch & is being prosecuted for his death. Drinking is not illegal, sleeping with your child is not illegal. Sure, doing both makes suffocating a baby far more likely - but putting your kid over a guard rail above wild dogs makes it more likely they may fall & be mauled too. Both aren't illegal - but they are warned against. I think it is just easier for the public to take some people's inventory & give others a free pass. Thing is - both were bad choices that resulted in death. NEITHER mom thought what they were doing was so risky or they would not have done it.

Yes, and I definitely feel some kind of way regarding her whooole situation. She does need to face the consequences, but I don't think she should be tried as an adult.

Many adults suspected she was pregnant. Her aunt called her mom and asked, parents of her softball team-members commented in the paper that she "looked pregnant".Her mom gave her a pregnancy test but let the girl take it behind a closed bathroom door so like someone else said, she probably ran it under the faucet.

That girl weighted around 100-110 pounds and her baby boy weighted over nine. She had to pry him loose when his shoulders got stuck IIRC.

My friend actually worked at a daycare which her older kids attended =\. Sadly she killed herself a few weeks later.

I brought that up but no one noticed. Yep, Mrs.Derkosh stood her toddler on a ledge tilted at a 45 degree angle and let go.

I WISH the nets he bounced out of were made to catch children, but they were designed to catch things like cell-phones,cameras,ect.

She needs to go to a mental institution I think. I'm not sure jail/prison would be appropriate.

The boy was white as snow blond and blue so I'm guessing white.

She's a Caucasian woman.So is her husband.

Here is a virtual reanacting (sp) of what happened.

Do you remember Mellissa Drexler, the "Prom Mom"? She was two years older, gave relatively uncomplicated birth in the bathroom of her school prom, trashed her son and went slow-dancing. IIRC,she had no prison time.

THIS girl is fourteen, and had to pry a nine-plus pounder out of herself with scissors. She did kill the baby, and then showered and bathed him and kept his body in her bedroom. And is tried as an adult.

I've been arguing this whole thread that justice should be blind but Cassidy's case makes it hard, hard, hard.

I could see how this could be an influence. One mom taking a wholesome trip to the zoo, holding her excited boy up to get a better look. The fact that he was eaten is so horrible that it's hard to hate the mom for some people, but not drinking and co-sleeping is common sense,so that this black woman's child died from her doing so pisses people off. The more outlandish the death, the more the general public feels for the parent whether he/she caused his death or not.Maybe even more so if they did, imo.

Quoting MysticWitchKat:" My friend actually worked at a daycare which her older kids attended =\. Sadly she killed herself a few weeks later."

Yes - she set herself on fire. The thing is though - she had issues BEFORE this happened, for sure. Most moms would never attempt to drink 1/5th of vodka (whats he admitted to drinking) just 3 weeks postpartum. I frankly can't imagine how she was standing upright to get home....as most women who haven't had a drink in 9 months could do 1/2 that volume if they tried. :(

She should have been sent to rehab immediately. That kind of drinking at 3 weeks post partum screams alcoholism to me. That is far more than someone out "partying" that is someone with a significant drinking problem.
