The movie isn't anything like the book so you wouldn't be missing much. The book is about the aftereffects and first person accounts of the zombie apocalypse from people all over and from all walks of life. The movie is Brad Pitt running around blowing things up. The damn zombies aren't even the same lol. The book zombies were slow and the movie ones are fast.

That's probably why they did it for the movie. The slow zombies are integral to the battles in the book. It's a great read, but you don't need to finish it before seeing the movie since it won't ruin anything for you lol.
