First of all, pierced ears aren't "equally permanent as tattoos" You can take out the earrings and the holes close up.

It's everyone's choice. I don't consider anyone a bad parent if they choose to pierce their babies ears. We had Addisons pierced at 4 months, only cried because I held her head for few seconds it took to pierce them. They've never been infected and she's loved them since she's known what they were. She's 4 now.

im not getting LO done until she wants them. she might not want holes in her body when shes older. & im no one to do that without her permission. Plus i dont want her to think that she needs to change her body to be pretty, shes pretty with out that stuff.

Dd got her ears pierced at 6 months old. Libby Lu is where we got them done but they are all closed down now. She cried for 5 mintues then had no problems. She's 5.5 years old now and she loves wearing earring. I just got her, her first pair of long earrings. If she dicided she didn't want it anymore I would remove the earrings. I think younger is better because they won't mess with them as much so they will heal fast and without any issues.

I've gotten both my girls ears done when they were 3 months or so. I've never had any problems

I had my ears pierced as a baby.
Now they look like this! 558509_4457646961431_143851864_n.jpg

But they were not done by a piercing gun.
Piercing needle. Guns are bad.

I have a pierced belly button and pierced ears. I haven't put anything in my upper ear piercings or belly button piercing for ten years and the holes are as open as ever. For many people, it is very permanent.

My DH for example? Permanent scarring and hole on his belly button. And he is humiliated by the damn thing. Had it professionally done, too. He was young an wishes he'd never done it. Thank god he was the one who made the choice though. The only person to blame is him.

For body piercings and upper ear peircings they use a hollow needle which create a hole that will still show once healed. Guns are only safe to be used on lower non cartalage, ear peircings and the hole is not noticeable if the jewelry is taken out. Also upper ear peircings especially cartalage peircings and belly button peircings use a much higher gauge jewelry which also causes a much larger hole.
