My parents are property owners and I live in one of their properties with my son. The bills are in my name and I pay rent every month. Its a very small place, a 1940s war house. It has an upstairs and a basement but I am only renting the upstairs. I believe the place is 600 sq ft and I pay 500 a month, the nice thing about it is that I can decorate however I want (painting) and it has a yard.

When I first moved in the conditions were that I pay the rent, pay my bills, and keep the place in nice condition. Then I started getting other conditions. I wasnt allowed to have any alcohol here. Not a big deal, I dont drink really. I cant have friends over. Well they are rarely over so I wasnt too worried about that. My sons father doesnt live here per se but he is here a lot with me son and I. Well lately my parents have been "stopping in" several times a day for no reason in particular. Today they told me that they dont want me dating and if I wish to date then I can move out.

Im 25 years old and I pay my rent and bills. When I moved in I didnt think that I would be so...controlled or else I would have moved elsewhere. They needed some help with this place though, it was a 'fixer upper' so they needed to have access to it very regularly and a normal renter probably would not have been okay with the landlords constantly being in and out. Plus they are both older and needed my help to do some lifting and work around the house.

My sons father thinks that I should just not react to their request at all, but I dont really know what to do. If I treat them like landlords (paying bills on time, proper upkeep of the property etc) then shouldnt I have some rights that a renter should have? Im fine with them coming into my house but I dont feel I should be evicted on short notice because they don't agree with my life choices.

I would tell them I wish to be treated as a normal renter or I'd be moving out.

Umm I would move...as fast as I possibly could. You are an adult...they have no right to make those "rules" for you :?

I would definitely say that I want to be treated as a normal renter...That no other conditions than the original rent agreement can be stipulated, or you and your little guy will just move out.

I'd tell them I want either a lease that states whatever demands you find acceptable, or you will move out. Paying rent (I believe) means they can't evict you without giving you 30 days notice. I can understand asking you to follow certain rules but it seems like they are using your situation as a way to control you, despite you being an adult.

:!::!:

Especially if you're 25. I could see maybe 18 years old them treating you like that but not at 25. That's ludicrous. I'd throw a party, lol.

Also do you have a lease with them? If so, I wouldn't worry about anything lol

I don't even understand why a parent would not want their 25 year old to date, lol. That doesn't even make sense to me...nor the alcohol.....

:!: you're 25 years old, not 17. They won't find anyone they can trust as much as their own child to rent the place.

IKR. As I was reading I was like ok maybe they are just anti alcohol or something. or that OP was underage, but as I was reading it just became more and more ridiculous.

No lease, my parents are kind of unusual landlords. With most of their teanants they will make a contract but when the contract isn't followed they don't really do anything about it. Example: One of their recent teanants signed a contract saying no smoking, no pets, no other room mates. Well this teanant broke all of those rules and got sent to jail (for unrelated charges) so his rent wasnt being paid. Its been 6 months and they still havent rented the place. They acquired their properties through inheritance, they never really wished to be landlords.

But they never gave me a contract or anything. If it was a money issue my sons father said he could give them some extra rent (like how some places charge extra rent for extra renters) but its not a money issue. Its a me issue. Im their only daughter and they really like to control me.
