At what age do you start portion control. I usually just let my kids eat till they are done but I want to make sure they have good eating habits. Lol.

Usually around age 5 children stop having the ability to self regulate hunger and fullness.

Before then really stress talking about when their tumm feels satisfied and not eating until their tummy hurts. My dd is 5 and still is able to self regulate because I taught her to listen to her body's signals of fullness.

Never. The only thing we limit is sweets. As long as it is healthy food it shouldn't be a problem. Limit snacking between meals as well.

I've taught my kids to eat when they're hungry, eat slowly if possible, and stop when they feel full. I simply try to model portion control at this point, I don't harp on it.

I have a few of these for my oldest, we started it around 3 just to give him an idea.

I'm not sure if they are even proper portions but I dont really limit anything because if I feel its really bad we just dont buy it.

Thanks y'all. My 4 year old could eat all day everyday and is skinny as a stick. My 2 year old barely eats but he is healthy looking and my 20 month old eats any chance she gets and will eat.till she looks 9 months pregnant. She is a chunker. Haha.

I don't really think that portion control is something you should worry about with kids. Only they know how hungry they feel and when they feel satisfied. How would you account for growth spurts?

I mean, unless you have an overweight child who obviously overeats... Then that would be a different scenario.

I would worry more about what type of food you offer them.

See we can't do that because dd IS always hungry. She grows at suck a fast rate for her age she suffers from almost constant hunger pains. Her father was the same way. Her estimated height as an adult by her height now and rate of growth along with my height and her father's is just under 6ft. So we just try and keep it healthy with eating.
