Yes but teaching her daughter about guns doesn't guarantee that she won't touch them.

Quoting Mom.to.PoohBear:" The shooter's mother was a "responsible gun owner" and look where that got her. "

OMgosh, you can't even place the correct blame?? What is WRONG with people!!??

Let's change the scenario. Let's say that Adam Lanza, after bludgeoning his mother to death with a hammer, stole her car and then drove it into a group of people...at a bus stop...or through the side of a restaurant, killing people as they ate.

Would you then call her an "irresponsible car owner".

This logic is flawed and downright stupid.

She was a responsible gun owner. She was trained, had a license and secured them IN HER OWN HOME. If Adam was 5 and then took the gun to school to kill his classmates, then I could see calling her irresponsible, but he was TWENTY. If you are keeping a gun in your home, it makes no sense to keep them locked up when only adults are living in the home. I can just picture a person getting their house broken into telling the criminal, "Hey, can you hang on a second while I get the keys to my safe to open it and get my gun."

You can't see how stupid that is??

I believe correct education on guns need to happen.

Like you stated in your post, the US is heavily populated which means more issues. I don't hear anyone screaming crying banning knives because of China. Let's face it, anything can be used as a weapon. So banning guns would not cease criminal activity and homicides. Many criminals obtain guns illegally anyway...so regardless if we do get "more strict" on gun control or if they ban guns (which they won't) they will find ways to get them from law abiding citizens.

It doesn't make your argument stronger by flinging insults and you don't need to lecture me about logic, I just got accepted into law school but thank you for that. She was irresponsible for keeping guns in her home when she knew that her son had mental illness. I do see how stupid it is, that's why I don't understand the self defense argument and also why I think people shouldn't have guns.

I don't think she was irresponsible for having guns in her home. I think if anything, she should have had them locked up in a gun safe. But then again that comes with the proper education that I brought up.

I didn't fling any personal insults at you, Miss thin skinned. I said the LOGIC (or lack of) is what is stupid.

Just wondering, will you be a defense attorney?

You are going to be a lawyer but don't understand the "gun as a defense" issue? Are you serious?

Let me ask you this: What is the "right to bear arms" meant to do for you, as a citizen of this country? No Googling.

Oh I don't need google dear, my husband is an American history teacher, I'm well informed about the Constitution, it also mentioned in there that a slave was 3/5 of a person. I don't think the founding fathers could have fathomed the artillery (specifically assault rifles) that people have in their possession. Also guns back then took forever to load which somewhat leveled the playing field for unarmed individuals.

I suppose we MAY know more soon, but I question how responsible she was to have guns in the house with a mentally ill son. The facts aren't in yet.

You didn't answer my questions.

I couldn't care less that your husband teaches history or that you just got into law school. you don't answer basic questions.

Armed citizenry is to protect the population from their government. If you are talking gun ban, I really don't understand why. Gun crime has actually gone down in the last 20 years...and that directly correlates with more and more people applying for and obtaining legal gun ownership.

You present ZERO solid evidence. Case dismissed.

Good luck in law school.

Where is your evidence that gun crime has gone down? It certainly has not in my area. I didn't need to answer your rhetorical question, obviously I know what the Constitution says about the right to bear arms. No, I'm not going to be a defense attorney.

I don't understand why she should give up her rights as a lawful gun owner because of her son's (supposed) mental illness. I haven't read anything to lead me to believe that this kid was at all violent, previous to his horrific crime.

Obviously not...however we share the same position on gun control and we speak frequently about the right to bear arms.

No but she taught her daughter how to properly handle the guns. Majority of shooting accidents are a result of mishandling the gun.

I'm just thinking of the incident in Mt Morris back in the 90s when that boy brought his parent's gun to school and shot that little girl to death.
